The website looks great! Do you know if the scholarship is guaranteed for all four years? Thanks!

I have loved the plans that this school plans to implement. Hope to be accepted here.

Debating if I should fill out an application even if I'm only from a semi-adjacent state. :D

If a student is from the adjacent states (Cali/AZ), but has spent the last year away from the Southwest, would you send a secondary?

Once the application is out on AMCAS, can you please post on this forum? I'm refreshing everyday and I got to be more efficient at work!

A notice will be posted in this forum and pre-allo when things go live in AMCAS. As of today we are still anticipating Friday, October 28 (a holiday!), at around 2 pm PST.

Edit: we are now anticipating being live and fully functioning in AMCAS by the morning of Monday, October 31. Fingers crossed!

I am a NV resident and actually a current student at UNLV. My stats aren't as high as the others who have posted on this thread (they already have multiple acceptances and are OOS) that they will apply to UNLV medicine. I don't have an acceptance yet. Is it still worth a shot to apply?

Definitely worth applying. It says on their website they screen for a 499 MCAT so as long as you have that it's worth a shot. Being a NV resident makes it worth applying alone

I apologize for the repeated question, I'm still confused about the adjacent state/nevada ties. Will UNLV only be sending secondaries to applicants who have ties to nevada AND are from an adjacent state/in-state? Or sending secondaries to applicants who are of an adjacent state OR have ties to nevada?

The latter. For admissions purposes applicants will be classified as either resident or non-resident. The only non-resident applications that will be accepted must come from an adjacent state (AZ, CA, ID, OR, UT).

In order to be considered a resident, an applicant must satisfy one or more criteria listed below (taken directly from the admissions website):
  • Currently enrolled, or a graduate of a university or college in Nevada
  • Graduate of a Nevada high school, public, charter or private
  • Born in Nevada
  • Lived in Nevada previously, before or after the age of 18, for at least 12 months
  • Primary family* members currently reside full-time in Nevada
  • Dependent of a member of the active-duty military who claims Nevada as their primary state of residence
  • Current or former member of the military who claims Nevada as their primary state of residence
  • Physically lived in Nevada for 12 months prior to matriculation date (planned start date for UNLV School of Medicine’s charter class is July 17, 2017)
*Primary family includes mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, or siblings, spouse/partner.

As you can see, an applicant may be considered a resident for admissions purposes even if that person is not a current legal resident of Nevada. For example, someone who graduated from a Nevada high school, left the state for college, and subsequently established legal residency elsewhere would be treated as a resident.

Thank you for the clarification! I had one more question.

After reading through the admissions requirements, I saw that a minimum cGPA of 3.2 is required. In regards to the applicants who completed a post-bac/special master's program to improve their academic record, but fell short of achieving the 3.2 cut off -- would you recommend against them applying?

Do you have to have the required courses done by the time you turn in your secondary application or by the time you matriculate? Every school I've applied to requires it by matriculation, but the wording on the website suggests that you need it finished by the time you turn in your secondary. What if you are currently taking one of the required courses? Will you not be considered for interview until it is completed?

If you have post-bacc/graduate work then the screening emphasis will be on the most recent two years of academic work (adjusted for course load). Given the wide variation in these programs the evaluation will be case-by-case.

The science courses (3 semesters biology - 1 with lab, 1 semester biochemistry) must be finished by the time of application.

The behavioral science/psychology/sociology semester must be finished by the end of this December.

Has the building been built? Or is that the planned infrastructure on the main page?

Sorry to hound you with so many questions. If I complete the behavioral science/psychology/sociology requirement in December, will my application be put on hold until then, or will I still be eligible for an interview before then?

Also, what would you consider behavioral science? Some schools are pretty flexible with this requirement, while others have a strict list. Would any of the following count?

Economic Principles
Spanish Culture Class
Family Finance (classified as part of the School of Family Life)
Spanish Civilization

Thanks for your help!

Your application will not be held up pending completion of the class (meaning you can still get a secondary and interview), but a decision by the admissions committee will not be rendered until it is complete.

You are welcome, but based on the titles you shared I am afraid none of those would count.

If you Google Earth-view the southeast corner of Shadow Lane and Pinto, alas, you will not yet find it there.

I'm loving the sass that UNLV is giving. Definitely brings the spirit of Vegas that I grew up with to the forums.

For all who are curious, Here is the google map of Shadow Lane and Pinto.

Same here! In all seriousness, just makes me want to send an application out even more!

So if we submit the application without biochem finished will we automatically be rejected?
Is there any way we can substitute the biochem pre-req with a comparable class?

That is the policy. We anticipate that applicants who are currently enrolled in undergrad will be seniors who have already taken the MCAT. These individuals should have completed at least one semester of biochemistry by this point.

What comparable class do you have in mind?

Thank you for the prompt response! Some schools take O-Chem II(that has overlap with biochem material) in lieu of biochem and vice versa. Or Molecular biology which has significant overlap with biochem. Or Cell Bio.

What is the mission of the UNLV School of Medicine? I have looked over your website and it doesn't state it explicitly.

I googled, hence why I asked. I'm assuming that's the planned medical center? How long will it take to build? In the mean time, will the school be teaming up with nearby hospitals for rotations?

It's on the website. There may not be a specific website but if you search enough you will find what they mission and goals are.

There is indeed some overlap, in particular with molecular biology, but for this cycle the policy is what the policy is. In future cycles there will always be the need to revisit and revise as needed. Overall, I hope you would agree that our course requirements are relatively light.

I will refer you to the following excerpt from the website:

UNLV School of Medicine will be a full-scale, four-year allopathic medical school that is an integral part of a vibrant, research-intensive public university. The medical school aims to improve access to high-quality health care in Southern Nevada, increase the number of medical specialists, and generate high-level clinical and specialty care. It will expand the medical expertise in the community by increasing the number of physicians and trained specialists who are committed to serving the region. One of the primary goals of UNLV School of Medicine is to provide diverse and medically underserved populations access to timely high quality health care. The accompanying academic health center will serve as the core infrastructure for the entire medical community and generate top-quality research that spans the basic and clinical sciences.

The renderings on the website represent the future medical education building and health sciences library. It is being designed by CO Architects, who have done a number of buildings for other medical schools. We are estimating 4-5 years to complete, depending in part on how quickly the necessary capital is raised.

The school is currently located in the medical district, on UNLV's Shadow Lane campus, and will be utilizing newly refurbished teaching space until the permanent structure is built. The primary clinical partner is UMC (University Medical Center), but clinical affiliations will also encompass Sunrise, the VA, and the three Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican hospitals in the area. The school is also starting a multi-specialty clinic which will serve as home for the core clerkship year. The Las Vegas-based residency programs currently under the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine will be transitioning to UNLV as of July 1, 2017.

I'm a non-traditional applicant that took the 2014 MCAT, so I didn't need behavioral science/psychology/sociology at the time, and didn't know I would need it now. I am a Nevada resident and have been graduated for a while now, but I am applying this year and would like to apply to UNLV. I saw an earlier post that said that you want it complete by December, but if I'm no longer in school and your website says that I can't take an online course, how can I meet this requirement to apply? What would you recommend for me to do?

Follow up question: is the timeline still accurate could we receive an interview as early as Nov 4

I am afraid you will not meet our course requirements for this cycle. If you do not already have an acceptance, I suggest taking behavioral science/psychology/sociology at a local college or university in the spring or first summer session of 2017, with the intention of reapplying during the 2017-18 cycle. You may also need to consider an MCAT retake.

For the benefit of others, our minimum GPA and MCAT requirements are conveniently located on our website.

Metric Requirements: Minimum scores for the MCAT are set at 499. An undergraduate GPA of 3.2 overall is required.
Oh ok. Thanks!
Just realized I won't be considered anyways if I go ahead and apply; I'm no where near Nevada.

Hello,

I'm pretty sure this should suffice, but I just wanted to double check:

I took the following courses while in college:
Intro to Sociology
Psychology of Learning
Medical Anthropology

Those would satisfy the Behavioral Science requirement, correct?

Introduction to Sociology would definitely fulfill the requirement.
