@WedgeDawg

Please put these secondaries up top, so people don't get confused with the other secondaries (from USCOM Columbia) posted on the thread.
Feel free to reduce the questions.

If you are a re-applicant, what have you done to strengthen your candidacy? (May be left blank when answer to question 1 is 'No')

If you are not accepted to medical school for the upcoming academic year, what are your plans?

If you are currently participating in an academic program, please project intended coursework for the academic year. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.)

If you do not expect to spend this academic year in school, please explain how you intend to use this time. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.)

Please describe any additional medically-relatedvolunteering/shadowing/experience not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.) 2000 characters

Please describe any additional community service or volunteer activities not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.)

Please describe any additional research, teamwork, accomplishments or leadership experience not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.)

One of the Guiding Principles of the USCSOM Greenville states that "Students will practice patient-centered care that values the interdependent roles of health care providers and facilities in service to their patients." Provide a definition of “patient centered care” and describe your understanding of how successful implementation of this principle will enable health care providers to address a patient’s medical and emotional needs in a more comprehensive, caring and cost-efficient manner (500 words).

Describe any past achievements, experiences, special family or personal circumstances that you believe make you a unique student, able to bring diversity to the class.

If you consider yourself disadvantaged and/or an underrepresented minority, in what capacity? Please answer with all of the following options that apply to you:

Disadvantaged background - family income
Disadvantaged background - rural community
Disadvantaged background - parental education levels
Disadvantaged background - first generation college student
Underrepresented minority

Please provide any information regarding personal challenges/hardships that you have overcome not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.)

What traits, experiences, challenges, interests, etc. make you unique and would bring added value to the learning environment at USCSOM Greenville?

If you are not a South Carolina resident, what relationships, bonds, or interests do you have to this state? (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.)

What other additional information would you like the Admissions Committee to consider that has not been previously addressed? (If not applicable, this question may be left blank.)

is the link to the secondary broken for anyone else?

I was able to log on a begin the application successfully. In the email they sent for the invite to complete the 2ndary, I saw an email address listed that you can contact about it not working.

Does anyone know why they are screening this year? It says "selected applicants" on MSAR. Last years thread one person said there was no screening

@WedgeDawg

These aren't the secondary questions that I got....

The secondary questions:

What are your medical practice goals?

Does this application represent a career change? If so, please describe your most recent career.

If it has been more than six months since you completed your bachelor's degree, please describe your employment status since that time (part-time, full-time, and dates).

In what region of the country do you want to practice medicine? Why?

What areas of medicine are you interested in at this time, or what areas do you plan to pursue?

Do you have any accomplishments or experiences that make you a unique applicant?

Are you sure? Mine says University of South Carolina - Greenville in the questions. What school did you select? It said to select columbia and then select greenville. Is that what you did?

I swear I have chosen the right one. I do not understand how I have not. Can you guys confirm that yours looks like this on the home screen?

Hey, you have chosen the wrong campus. Go back and make a new application. You will see where it says if you are applying to either Greenville or Columbia campus, you have to choose Columbia.

Yeah I did. Look at my picture. It says "School of Medicine in Greenville". I specifically read those instructions. Would you mind please looking at what yours says and comparing it to what mine says (in the picture attached)?

Also confused as to how my questions are the wrong ones if they specifically refer to USCOM Greenville in them. Do you think I got questions from a different year or something?

Your picture shows that you selected Greenville. You have to select Columbia. When you create a new application, it says that if you are applying to Columbia or Greenville, you HAVE to choose Columbia. Make a new app and select Columbia. If that's what you already did then I honestly do not know what to tell you. I'd give them a call early Monday.

@SkubaDuba @elevatone

I totally understand what you say, but you are to select Greenville on the second page when that is an option. Let me walk you through (just in case maybe you are mistaken too).

Here is what I am shown (step-by-step)

If you are applying to the USC School of Medicine - Columbia or the USC School of Medicine - Greenville, please choose 'Columbia' for your campus; you will have the option of choosing either the Columbia or Greenville program on the following page.

Here I select Columbia.

Please click on the dropdown below to select the application type you want to complete.

Here I select Sch of Medicine in Greenville (because that is what I am applying to and that is what the page told me I will have an option to do beforehand). This SDN thread is for students applying to USCOM Greenville right?

Then this the app I got. If your main page says Sch of Medicine in Columbia, but you are applying to Greenville and not Columbia, then I think you may have the incorrect app. I think you select the Columbia campus on the first page and then the Sch of Medicine in Greenville on the second page. I will call Monday to confirm, like you said.

Thanks for your help.

HAHA you are totally right. Huge mistake on my part! Thanks for being persistant About it because I was totally about to work on the Columbia questions!!

I hope I am right. Y'all could be right too. I don't understand why they made it so confusing. You would think if they charge so much for secondary fees that they could at least make it easy on their applicants?

Alright, good to hear!! Hahaha. Glad we got that sorted out! :clap:

Hey, double check that you are in the right thread or whether or not you made a mistake like I did on the secondary - first choose Columbia THEN choose Greenville. These prompts are not for Greenville

Good look on yellowbottlesippin's part

@WedgeDawg

These questions are missing from the prompts above.

My fault. Thanks for catching all of them. So many questions. Many without char or word limits.

I don't think they used to, but according to MSAR they do this year. I was wondering that as well
On the MSAR, there's indication that USC-Greenville screens while USC-Columbia doesn't. If they're both in the same application system and you can choose whichever one to complete, I think it may just be an error on the part of the MSAR. Did y'all's emails inviting you to complete the secondary indicate that it was specific to USC-Greenville?

The subject of mine was "USC-Columbia Supplemental Application for Fall 2017," but I've filled out both applications.

I haven't gotten a secondary, and technically I am OOS. But doing my gap year in greenville, and you can declare residency after a year. Oh well maybe I just won't get a secondary here.

Yes, mine was specific to Greenville. And on the MSAR page, I think the information is specific for Greenville. I don't see any indication that it's talking about both schools, but I could be wrong. My email was from Greenville specifically, and it said "Thank you for your interest in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. We have reviewed your AMCAS application and would like to invite you to complete a supplemental application, designed to allow our applicants the opportunity to provide additional information deemed important by our admissions committee." Hope that helps

Ah okay. Thanks.

How are the questions "Describe any past achievements, experiences, special family or personal circumstances that you believe make you a unique student, able to bring diversity to the class." and "What traits, experiences, challenges, interests, etc. make you unique and would bring added value to the learning environment at USCSOM Greenville?" different from each other?

I would log in to confirm. There are questions everywhere.

I am also at a loss of how to address these two questions separately. 🙁

And on top of that they already have a question that asks about challenges. That's three questions with a lot of overlap

32,000 characters is quite a lot of space for their essays...

Pretty sure it's a typo since the rest of the application sections give a 2,000 character limit. At any rate, they specify a 500 word limit on the "patient centered care" essay, which I can assure you is nowhere near 32,000 characters. The rest of the prompts on that page give you pre-written answers to choose from.

My essay was 500 words exactly

So what is the consensus on this???

Is the question ," If you are currently participating in an academic program, please project intended coursework for the academic year. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank," referring to those of us who are entering Senior year or is it for people who are doing Post Bac program? My intended coursework for the fall semester is already shown on my AMCAS application. Any advice? Thanks 🙂

I thought the same thing, bizarre.

The way I looked at it is that the required one is the standard diversity essay which I wrote. The other optional one they are referring in particular to any special circumstances / hardship/ challenge of any sort . I felt safe to skip this one as I do not have any such situation. My answers would have essentially been the same to both essays and I thought that would be very lame. As they say when something is not required , it is truly optional and just needs discretion .

So if I never got a secondary but have strong ties to the area is there any way to request one? or is it too bad so sad? Lizzie M 72

I don't think it's too late, you may still be getting one , don't think you would be screened with that score

They screen with extracurriculars and stats, as many other schools do. See their holistic review process. Utah does the same, so does Central Michigan.
