Does anyone (particularly current Brody students) know on average, after tuition and fees, what amount from loans is left for cost of living? I want to start organizing a budget but I can't do much yet w/o the award letter! lol

Current student here. If you take full loans and waive health insurance, you'll get $13,000 +/- 500 disbursed twice a year. If you use the student health insurance subtract roughly 1200 from that

Thanks! So does that mean that you budget roughly 1300 for each month for a 10 month period ?

Not quite. 13000 twice a year for 26000 total. Disburses in late July and early January to my knowledge

My budget is roughly as follows. Note that I take full loans and do not live frugally

700/mo housing related
1200/mo groceries, spending, eating out, misc, etc
250/mo car related

Your spending money will ebb and flow depending on school related costs (ex at random points you’ll be dropping hundreds out of the blue for a study resource or a board exam) but I average it out to about a grand a month on personal stuff. The other 200 covers those occasional expenses. I might not use the 200 at all a couple months in a row but then drop 600 the next month for Step 1, etc

Others choose to take less loans which is very doable with greenvilles lower cost of living. Others still take full loans but stash some away each disbursement to save for 4th year (often much more expensive) or for big purchases/expenses they know are coming up (new car, having a child, trip to Vegas, kilo of coke, etc). Unless you are supporting another financially or have debts that require payment, you should have no problem living comfortably in Greenville on full loans or even slightly less.

Ha! Solid advice! Thanks very much!

Looks like the wait list came out on March 22 last year. The good news is that based on the March 15 update, there are still another 40 or so acceptances that will be coming out. The bad news is that the last ones won't trickle out until at least May.

Would the 40 be the acceptances or the number of people waitlisted?

All their seats are full... the 40 acceptances come off the waitlist. The waitlist is probably 100 or so.

This is all the information I have, and it's from the BSOM website:

As of March 15, 2019 we have:
  • Received 1075 AMCAS applications
  • Received 984 Supplementary applications
  • Interviewed 451 applicants
  • Made 86 offers
(Generally it takes 120-135 offers to fill a class)
I don't know if the wait list has been finalized or not.

The waitlist is actually smaller than the incoming class so I would say it’s usually around 60 people.
At least that’s what it says on the website.

Was it just a few rejections yesterday? Has anyone heard of any acceptances/wait-list notifications going out this week?

Site says their wait list is typically smaller than the entering class and that usually about a dozen people make it off the waitlist. Good luck guys.

I haven’t heard back about admission into Brody, but I did hear that I got into their Summer Program for Future Doctors, anyone else attending or applied?

Hi piratemedms I got accepted into Summer Biomedical Research Program (SBRP) at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University. Is this the same one you are talking about? I am still deciding whether to go.

Unfortunately it’s not the same program as the one I’m referring to, but I have heard great things about the biomedical program! Congrats!

Has anyone received their financial aid award letter?

Bump!
I am curious when we will receive this (hopefully before the April 30 deadline!) For those on the WL, I will very likely give up my spot unless some cosmic event occurs and I receive a significant financial aid award from Brody.

So I’m on the waitlist right now and just got a job as a medical scribe but there’s a one year commitment - do I include the job in my update? Like do you think they’ll be like oh there’s a one year commitment to that position

I think it's awesome you got that position! But if I'm understanding correctly, idk if I'd include it since there is minimal time for significant reflection on this update between now and the time you'd likely hear back. Just imo

concur! you need at least a little bit of time doing the job before it actually matters, in my opinion. for next cycle, if you don't get in this time, i do think it will be valuable and could push you to an acceptance! good luck

Any admitted students/current students know when the school will require a drug test? Or is this going to be performed at orientation? I am reading nothing about it in the acceptance package, but I did see an option on Castle Branch.

A friend got in off the wait list today.

Do you know if they received the offer by email or phone call? I know they asked for both email and phone number when giving out the waitlist spots just not sure which one to keep an eye out for.

To my understanding Brody does all acceptance/rejection notifications via Email. I’d look out for that.

Maybe that’ll change as we get further into the spring/summer when they want to hear back asap from the applicants. But that’s just speculation.

Could any current students talk about housing in Greenville? Where many students stay, whether having roommates is common, apartment versus house, etc. I would really appreciate any advice or resources. I’m not exactly interested in a “luxury” housing option and wouldn’t mind a roommate but I’ve heard that living alone could be preferable. Thanks!

Edit: would appreciate just a pm if anything!
