How was the interview?

It was just an interview invite. I have not interviewed. I am going to withdraw from it this week. I received an acceptance at a school I am very excited for and the deposit is due a week later from the interview. So I hope one of you guys get it!

Hey guys, I applied to VCOM - Auburn on Oct. 2, and I received my secondary a day after. I submitted my secondary, and was waiting for my portal to be "complete." On Oct. 24, I received an email from an "Application Service Specialist" out of VCOM - Carolinas stating that I was missing my committee letter (which I was still waiting on being complete). My portal also showed me as "Incomplete / Letters of Recommendation Incomplete." Then, my committee letter writer submitted my letter on Oct. 26. Using the VCOMVCAMP portal, I responded using the "communication" tab and stated that my letter had been sent and I also "updated" my application on AACOMAS to insure that nothing would be delayed. I received no response to this.

The Monday following (Oct. 29), I checked portal, and at that point everything showed up (my physician letter, committee letter, work letter). However, after two days, I checked portal, and I was still listed as "Incomplete / Letters of Recommendation Incomplete." I waited until Nov. 5 to send an email from my personal email which basically addressed the same thing and went something like.."I have sent all of my information, what is missing and what can I do?" It is now Nov. 19th, and I have received no response; I am still listed as "Incomplete / Letters of Recommendation Incomplete."

Has anyone else had this issue? What should I do? Please help.

I had a few issues with my application (none with LOR’s), but I contacted the VA campus, via phone call. They were EXTREMELY nice and helpful. So, I would suggest possibly giving them a call to see what is going on. Good luck!!!

Does anyone know if we have to submit a drug test with our health immunization forms prior to marticulation?

Thanks! I did call them after the Thanksgiving holiday (11/26), and they were very nice and helpful! They moved my application directly to complete! Now I am just bitter that I did not do it sooner because my application has been put a month behind. Oh well, lol

quick turn around! do u mind sharing ur stats. did they phone you?

PM for stats. But yes very quick turnaround. They told us 3-4 weeks. They phoned me and then sent an email. They also said there is an official letter in the mail

Do y’all realize this school will leave us 300k in debt :/ I’m happy but this kinda is a vibe killer.

Well, unless you go to a Texas school, NYU, or some state school (with in-state tuition), most of any other medical school will leave you with a 250K to 400K of debt. Cool thing is if you stick to it and don't fail out, you'll be able to make that in a year of attending salary. Congratulations on your acceptance. I assure you if you truly love this field, it'll be all worth it.

Which type of drs make that type of salary ? After taxes and mal practice is pretty sure drs make 4K -6k a month

Do y’all plan on taking both the usmle and comlex? The merger to me should help us avoid this

Wait! WHAT? No, a lot less people would go into the medical field if that was the case. The cost compared to the benefits would have been ridiculous. You do realize that 4K to 6K a month that's like 48K to 72K a year right? Are you referring to resident salary? because that is definitely not the case. I'm pretty sure you can secure at least 200K a year plus bonus out of residency at the very minimum even as a Family physician.
Edit: Just wanna note that money shouldn't be your motivator to go into medicine though.

USMLE will likely improve your app post-merger for competitive/desirable residencies. If you don't mind ending up Primary care at a community hospital, then you might be fine with just COMLEX.

I have an interview coming up here and wanted to see what's the cheapest option to get to the school. I am traveling from FL

Hi everyone,
So after you receive acceptance offer, do you still need a letter of recommendation from a DO?

I remember reading from the Secodary that a DO letter was still needed but admissions didn't say anything about it.

Also, have anyone tried to an extension on the offer? Maybe by 5 business days or less.

Yes you do and they let you take your time... as long as it’s before matriculation

Drive. Atlanta is the closest big airport. Montgomery is the closest regional. You will need to rent a car for either (and idk if you can rent one at Montgomery, it's very small).

I don't mind answering questions (I'm a 4th year), but won't do it over PM. Chances are other people have the same Qs as you so I'd like to do it here so others can see.

How do most people pay , do they take out 300k if loans? In addition is it that bad to take boards, and would it be silly to choose this school over an MD school

How do rotations work? I am married, and really concerned how 3rd and 4th year will look. I read most rotation sites last four weeks, and I am petrified I will have to drive all over the state.

I would, in general, not choose any DO school over any MD school on the continental US. I would choose this school over a carribean or foreign MD school 100 times out of 100. Boards suck but I took both USMLE and COMLEX and I felt prepared, even as an average pre-clinical student. I didn't take out full loans the first two years because auburn is cheap to live. 3rd and 4th year I took out the full amount. I will walk with 330k but took out about 270k over the 4 years. Interest on the loans sucks and the loans are unsubsidized.

You will rank every site from 1 to whatever and give your reason. They then do a site match and that will be your 3rd year site. IF it does not have an associated residency or residency, you will do at least one month at a site that has one. If for some reason your site doesn't have a certain specialty, you will be assigned another site. It is my understanding that VCOM provides housing for those months if you need to be relocated. Most sites have everything in house and about half have a residency or fellowship. 4th year you can opt to stay at the same hospital. I chose not to for financial and personal reasons, and the school accommodated me at a hospital near my family. Most students stay at their 3rd year site for 4th year.

Thank you SO much. I didn’t have the first clue how rotations worked, and I thought I would have to travel to 6-7 different sites throughout third and fourth year.

Anyways, if you don’t mind answering one last question. I heard that first and second year is not super strenuous from the second year students during interviews, because of study guides, help from classmates, etc... Can you shed any light on rotations during 3rd and 4th year? For instance, do you guys get a lot of hands on opportunities and ability to see your own patients? After reading horror stories from DO students at other schools, I was hoping VCOM was a little more structured. Overall, do you feel prepared and ready to tackle intern year?

I can't speak for every site. I've had rotations at two. Both were pretty good. My main site I was VERY hands on when inpatient and did a lot of procedures and had a decent amount of "autonomy". That site had pretty meh outpatient rotations but it allowed me to study a lot. The other site I've had rotations at my 4th year has allowed me to be pretty hands on. It's going to vary from site to site and preceptor to preceptor. Some won't know what to do with you regardless of site. I haven't heard major complaints from my class about any of their sites but it doesn't mean they don't exist, since I'm not on speaking terms with everyone obviously.

Do you think I have a good chance of getting into radiology at this school?

Nothing is wrong with getting information about both schools. This is a life decision for me.
Look, it has nothing to do with how good LSU or VCOM is. The fact of the matter is that if you get into LSU it will better serve you going forward. IT will be easier to get into a radiology residency, or whatever else you want to do. You will be seriously sick with yourself if you choose a DO over an MD school when it comes time for residency applications. You have to be a stellar DO student to get the same interviews an average MD student gets.

Well thank you I’m leaning toward LSU! I appreciate everyone’s honesty.

I LOVED VCOM, but if LSU gives you a chance, take it. I’ve met a few students that were accepted to both MD and DO, and they chose the DO route. They are now kicking themselves because of some of the more competitive residencies. Good luck.
