Ok yes, then we are on the same page lol! I was going to start renting in June but start looking in January/Feb. Where do current students currently live? Any apt recommendations?

So I started looking in March, but I stated I was willing to start paying rent in May and that got me a place sooner. Places will not hold apartments vacant for two months. I didn’t move furniture in until June but by being willing to start rent before June, I was able to secure a place. Now, that is dependent on funds for each person, but that was also something a local realtor recommended.

Students live in Joplin in Plaza, Terrance Green, Villas, Rustic Ridge, Campbell Reserve and there are small houses people rent or buy to name a few. There is a realtor that works with medical students coming to the area to find the housing that they need.

Just to echo what has been said by the other students, the academic differences between campuses don’t really exist. your ideal campus will be based more off of your personality than anything else. The entrance GPA/MCAT difference between both campuses is also negligible (just look it up on the kcu website if you want to see for yourself). It basically comes down to deciding if you want to live in a “small town” (put in quotes because Joplin is way bigger than the town I grew up in :)) or if you want to live in a big city. I will say one thing though, rent is way cheaper here in Joplin :)

Oh and concerning rent, I started looking in May and got put on a waitlist at the apartment complex I was looking at, but then got off the waitlist like 3 weeks later.

And... I’m not sure what all the buzz is about this ipad pencil, but I get along just fine without one :)

Haven't seen anyone saying anything specifically about renting in KC, so I just wanted to say that most people I know who didn't want to live in Century Towers (the apartments right across the street from the KC campus where many of the students live) used Accepted Students Day to tour apartments. It's good to go in advance to put your name out there for when apartments come up, but most places don't know their availability until 60 days before you move in, so don't feel like you won't be able to find a place to live if you don't lock it down months and months in advance!

I seriously hope they pull some magic out this week and give 10/24, 10/27, 10/30, and 11/1 decisions this week so hopefully we get 11/6 ones before the 14th!!! This waiting and impending $1000 deposit is killing me for sure!!!!
Good luck to all of you waiting to hear before me!

I live at copper point. Any specific questions? I like it overall. It’s about an 8 minute drive from campus, but just a couple minutes from rangeline (which is where a lot of the big stores/restaurants are). There are quite a few med students that live here too. I’m happy to answer any specific questions you might have, just let me know.

would you recommend the studio or 1 bed room? Also did you have to purchase a stackable washer and dryer for the apartment? Also if it is not too intrusive do you mind sending me some photos?

Congrats to those of you getting accepted today!
Also, props to everyone who I saw interviewing today in the snow, especially the girls walking around in their skirts in < 30 degrees lol

Yep, I looked online before but didn't tour till Accepted Students Day. Found a place I liked then and secured it. Didn't have to pay rent till I was physically living in the apartment.

Interviewed on 10/18, accepted to KC campus. I have a LM of 63, screwed up big time 2008-2012. Big upswing + extracurriculars helped me (I think but who knows). Dm if you have any specifics I can help with!

I’d recommend a 3 bedroom and get 2 roomates! But thats not always easy haha. I can’t really say much about the studio vs 1 bed room. I think it comes down to personal preference and what you can afford. Washer/dryer are not included but there are hookups in the apartment. It would be nice to have them in your apartment, but again its up to you if it’s worth it or not. There is a laundry room on the complex but they charge $2.50 each time you use them.

Are there any Joplin-campus students that have kids? Can you speak to the safety of the town (for kids walking to/from school), the quality of the school system, activities, or anything else you'd like to share? If this is my final choice of school, kiddos will be in middle school and high school.

At my interview I spoke to a 2nd year student who had 2 children and lived in a house off campus with his wife. He said they have never felt uncomfortable or unsafe. I can’t speak on the part about the kiddos walking to school.

I personally don’t have kids, but I can attest to the safety in Joplin. Pretty much anything between 32nd street and 7th is the “safest” area in the sense that it is the least run down. The areas where the tornado hit ( you can clearly tell based on how tall the trees are) are all new development, and extremely safe. i have gone for runs at night and the early morning without feeling threatened. The high school is brand new ( due to tornado related reasons) and that is actually where we had our white coat ceremony. I do occasionally see highschool students walking to and from school, but I haven’t noticed any middle schoolers doing that, (granted, I am not really looking for them lol)

There should be a lot of upcoming decisions, they told us yesterday during the interview they want our decisions by 12/21 so I imagine that they'll have everyone else's as well.

Definitely a good step, but the real key is to actually get the program directors to start thinking like this.

Agreed, great first step. To change the attitude of PDs, now that is the greater challenge.

Yeah, this is a good first step but doesn't really mean anything. What matters is what PDs think, and for the foreseeable future, USMLE will continue to be better understood and preferred to COMLEX
