2018-2019 Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (Athens, Ohio)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm non-traditional OOS. I like the way that they accept students on the same interview day. it's less stressful

Congrats!! do you mind sharing how was the interview in general?
It was pretty low stress. 3 30 minute interviews with faculty who then meet afterward to make a decision on your file. They ask the typical questions: why medicine, why DO, why OU. And then about your experiences and about you. It was pretty conversational for the most part. Just be yourself and be confident!

Hi guys! I normally don’t post on sdn, but I was accepted here (athens campus) yesterday via phone call on my way home from my interview (10/12) and I thought I would share my experience for those of you still waiting!

I submitted 8/14 and received my complete email 8/27. Interview invite 9/14. Once you accept your interview date, they don’t send any confirmation or reminder emails. Like I said, I interviewed yesterday, finished at 3:30, and received a call just after 6, but I know it’s a 50:50 on whether they call friday or email you monday. I’m an in-state applicant.

For those of you unsure about campus preference, they told us at the interviews that unless you have very strong ties to Dublin/cbus or Cleveland (like you grew up there, lots of family, etc), you are unlikely to get accepted there. So, if you don’t have strong ties, select athens as your top choice.

New curriculum is super interesting and application based more than memorization based. It’s “team-based learning”, similar to PBL but with a little more structure, in my opinion. Weekly quizzes on prerecorded lectures/supplemental readings we are given beforehand. Lots of group activities as opposed to actual lectures, and groups meet in Friday’s to discuss a relevant case study. First semester is “wellness” so learning about healthy populations. Second is “acute illness” so same systems but acute illness. Third is “chronic illness” and fourth is “return to wellness”. The dean, students, and one of my interviewers explained it pretty well.

The interviews are 3-4 1:1 interviews. If you applied Cleveland or Dublin, one of these interviews will be a video chat interview with a faculty member from the respective campus. Very relaxed atmosphere, and everyone is just looking to get to know you better and help you get in, not to grill you. It’s awesome and fun, and I can’t imagine going anywhere else. It’s a welcoming environment, from faculty to students floating around. Expect primarily straightforward questions, like why do, why medicine, why ou, as well as possibly questions asking to clarify specific aspects of your application depending on your interviewer.

I hope this was helpful, and if anyone has other questions, feel free to pm me!

Accepted this morning! :soexcited:For those worried about GPA or MCAT...I had a very low MCAT (much lower than the previous acceptances I saw that were posted) and was still accepted. If you have lower scores or a low GPA there is still hope! Congratulations to those accepted and good luck to everyone applying. Feel free to message me if you have questions. They did ask me about me MCAT but I guess my answer was good enough to be a part of next year's class.
Congrats! Do you mind me asking your stats?

In state; GPA: 3.87 Double major, double minor; MCAT: 498 ( lol)

I talked about my struggle with the MCAT and how I was doing a lot at once and that I'm ready to take on challenges and I will give it my all. Even if someone has a score that is lower than mine don't lose hope. Show that you're willing to keep fighting for it. You never know what can happen and if you're offered an interview I think it's more about who you are rather than your scores. They also have learning specialists at the school and I implied I will be meeting with them to work on standardized tests if accepted (all for that!)

I currently work as a medical scribe. I have a lot of medical mission work and volunteering, ECs.. and I do think it's important to have a letter from a DO and to know the profession well. I only want to do osteopathic medicine and was very honest about everything in my application. I tried my best to show that this is what I want to do and I'm going to fight and advocate for patients.
That is amazing, congrats! I appreciate the information.

Submitted my secondary on Sept 13 after I found out they sent it to a different email. Application still says "application submitted". Not sure if if silent reject or they just somehow haven't come across it yet. This is my dream DO school though. Hope I hear back.

I've been "application submitted" since early July. I emailed them and they told me to wait and that they haven't reviewed mine yet? The email was rude. I may call them today.

Hi everyone! I just finished my first year at OUHCOM Cleveland, so if you have questions or anything I’d be happy to answer in a message or on here. To answer the question about campus differences, Dublin just graduated their first class and Cleveland hasn’t graduated a class yet so there is not stats on Match differences. But we are all taught everything the same. They go so far as to not allow professors to hold formal review periods unless all 3 campuses offer them. They try to make everything the same. They say “one class, three campuses” or something like that all the time.
I have an interview this Friday. Do you have any tips?

Accepted! Interviewed 10/12 and got a phone call at around 5:30 that same day that I had been accepted! If any of you have any questions, feel free to let me know! It is a super chill interview and everyone there is super friendly and make sure you are relaxed before the interviews.

Hey! How are you liking the curriculum? The students that I spoke to on interview day were all second year students so they didn't know much about the curriculum.

Given that the curriculum is brand new, there have been expected bumps in the road along the way so far. However, these have been addressed (faculty has been good about listening to our concerns and vice versa) and I find the curriculum to be very beneficial. It is a different type of learning to get used to, with a lot of independent work expected from the students. We have been thinking and acting like physicians would in the real, clinical world, which will ultimately benefit us greatly come rotations, residency, etc, rather than just memorizing a subject for a "block" then moving on to the next one and hoping it all comes together

Hi guys! I submitted my secondary 7/29 and didn't receive a completed email until 9/13. I have yet to hear anything back. Does anyone who has gotten an interview or accepted have any advice? This is my top choice school and the wait is killing me!

This is the most annoying advice but I would just keep waiting. Patience is huge in the application process. HCOM got a record breaking number of applications this year so they are backed up in reviewing applications:/

I’m in the same boat. This is my top DO school. Would it hurt to call?

You could call if you feel like you really need to, but based on the previous posts on people calling, it doesn't seem like it will be much help. It is up to you. If you feel like it will take some stress away, then do so, but I wouldn't based on everyone else saying it isn't helpful.

Had an amazing experience. My student host was amazing. The interview is laid back and the faculty are so welcoming. I genuinely enjoyed my conversations during my interview with them. I had a hiccup here and there but it turned out well. I received a phone call on my way home today and was super excited.

Hey y'all. Long time user, first time poster. I am a current 1st year at OUHCOM at the Athens campus, happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have!

Hi, I was accepted last friday to the Cleveland campus and I understand the general dress code is very professional with exception to labs. Are there specific school-mandated scrubs you have to purchase for these or are you able to get whatever type you would like ? Trying to lessen the blow of the cost of everything I need to get by spreading it out

You can wear whatever scrubs you want to lab at the Cleveland Campus. Dress is business casual- no jeans.

BurnAccount nailed it on the head, but just in case anyone else has questions about it, I will say this. Cleveland and Dublin campuses both have business casual dress codes for all lectures, however Athens does not have a dress code unless you're in anatomy lab (any scrubs you want to wear), OMM lab (t-shirt and shorts / leggings), or if you are seeing patients / simulated patients (business casual dress with white coat and badge). Hope that helped clear it up for you! Let me know if you have any other questions, and congrats on your acceptance!

Does anyone know if there is a facebook group yet?

Are we able to submit more than 5 letters of recommendation? I recently have been shadowing a DO physician, and I thought a letter would be great to add to my application. I was complete 7/31/2018. Thank you in advance!

I had six. At my tour earlier this year, they said 5-6 is kind of the max of what they want. If you don't already have a DO letter I would recommend using that for sure! Good luck!

Does anyone know if it's possible to transfer to one of the other OU-HCOM campuses after matriculation? Has this ever happened?

Personally, I have not heard of this happening. You rank each campus highest to lowest on preference of where you would like to go during the application process, and can get accepted / waitlisted /rejected from each campus separately. What I mean by that is I had ranked Cleveland my top choice, and Athens second, and was accepted to the Athens campus, but placed on the waitlist for Cleveland campus prior to matriculation. If a seat had opened in Cleveland, I could have been taken off of that waitlist and gone to that campus, rather than Athens. Once matriculation comes, everybody is pretty set in stone on their respective campus. Hope that helped! Let me know if you have any other questions, I realize my answer was a bit wordy.

There is a facebook group for Class of 2023. I saw one for Dublin specifically too - not one yet for Athens or Cleveland.

Yeah I just noticed that they had the link in the monthly email they send out to accepted students! There are links for all campuses!

Hey guys! I submitted my secondary 7/20 and it still has yet to be marked complete. Should I call? I emailed them and got no response. Is this a silent rejection or did they basically lose my app?

Does anyone have good details on what the new curriculum entails and how it is different? I understand the is more independent learning but how does it compare to the old curriculum? Is it blocks? Also, what is the difference for the CPC and PHWC?

Hello, I am an OOS applying to OhioHCOM. Im asked to rank the campuses by preference but their website didnt really point out any differences othr than location. Does anyone know more details that can help me make a choice?

from what previous posters have mentioned they look for very strong connections for the Columbus/Cleveland locations and they both require an extra "Why this city" essay
