Does anyone know what expected costs would be for an OOS student? The website provided a 4 year break down, but they are not always up to date nor the most accurate. I am wanting a better idea of what total cost would be per year from a student or acquaintance (tuition, rent, expenses, etc.)? Any ideas?
And to piggyback this... Can OOS students become MN residents and pay in-state tuition after their first year?
OOS LM 71 Ca resident
OOS tuition is $55,437 but I am not sure that they have a full break-down on their website. You could always ask admissions for an expected breakdown. Minneapolis area isn't that expensive to find housing (Dinkytown is a relatively cheap area).
Unfortunately, as far as I know, the answer is no. Your tuition is fixed for an OOS student when you enter for four years. MN doesn't have a system like CA where you can become a resident after your first year of medical school. I believe you have to work for one year prior to matriculation to medical school before you acquire residency status in MN. I looked at their website regarding scholarship/merit opportunities for OOS students, but it doesn't seem too generous: Funding Your Education
@11/9 interview people still hoping we'll hear back before the holidays (I think that's what they told us on interview day anyway)...
Preach - saw 11/8 interviewees getting callbacks, just over here staring at my phone today~
Yes, I definitely remember Matt Belinski saying that we should hear back before the holidays! We still have next week!
Twin Cities has 15 non-resident tuition scholarships (full OOS tuition). Duluth has 10. So it seems like 25 of the ~40 OOS students that matriculate have a full ride unless I am misreading something.
Medical School Scholarships & Grants
Seems generous to me given how broad their diversity definition is.
Criteria to qualify for these OOS full-ride scholarships is educational disadvantage, race/ethnicity, and financial need. So, there aren't any merit scholarships as far as I know.
On that same page:
University of Minnesota Foundation Scholarships: Awarded by the Medical School Scholarship and Awards Committee** on the basis of academic achievement, academic interests, and financial need"
I don't know how many of those there are, but just below they indicate the Twin Cities campus has 300+ scholarships awarded (includes need based). These require a separate application, however.
I talked to someone from the financial aid office who said merit aid is often offered at the time of acceptance. Has anyone been offered this? As a state school this is my cheapest option but it still seems so expensive so I'm stressing
any new acceptance news?
II today, LM 70, OOS.
II today! Secondary submitted on 10/26. LM 68. OOS
What time do people usually hear back about acceptances?
4-6 weeks following the interview
I should specify, I mean what time of day. Morning? Afternoon? Evening?
Oh, sorry. I’m not aware of those details
Waitlisted, Interviewee 11/8, IS. Good luck to everyone else!!
Sorry to hear. Did you just get the email?
Did you just find out?
Waitlisted (received the email around 6PM CST last night). Interviewed 11/9.
Any insights into the timeline from here on out?
I think I remember them saying that you probably won't hear anything more regarding the decision until April/May? but then they will tell you exactly where you are on the waitlist.
Accepted today!! call/voicemail around 3-4 pm CT, OOS, #blessedandiknowit
When did you interview?
Accepted today! Interviewed on 11/13. OOS
I heard back right before 5PM EST.
That's what I assumed I just wasn't clear from the language used. The email just says "the next time you are notified of a decision you will be informed as to whether you have been accepted to the class, placed on the ranked Alternate List, or not accepted." I just wasn't sure if they would make acceptances off the wait list before May.
Would you be willing to PM me? I have questions about the acceptance!
Have any late Nov/early Dec interviewees heard back yet?
absolutely. Will msg.
Hey has anyone who got the acceptance call get an email? I know it's the holidays but it's been 1 week since i got the call and I haven't received an email yet.
I haven't either. They are probably gone for the holidays.
I think the "2 weeks" to do the deposit and stuff starts once you get the email but idk...?
II around the same time, complete in October - did you receive a date confirmation?
Does anyone know if they have student hosts for the night before the interview?
i don't believe so- or at least no info was provided re student hosts in my II

Hi Everyone! Any OOS Student receive an acceptance or interview? I am an OOS student and have an interview in January 2019.
Yep, OOS interviewed 10/16 and accepted 11/9 LM 71 CA
Does anyone know about what percentage of interviewees get accepted?
I haven't received the email yet but I called the office today and they said to expect an email tmrw once more of their staff is back.
Also for anyone wondering, the "2 weeks" starts once you have received the acceptance email.
Thats awesome! Congratulations! Would you be willing to PM?
Hey guys, this is probably a silly question but is a 5:30pm flight out of Minneapolis St Paul too early? The email from Matt Belinski said that the interview wraps up at 2:20pm but not sure if that means we can leave at exactly 2:20pm. Thank you and congrats to the accepted!!

My interview day ran about an hour late because of snow - we wrapped up around 3:30 if I remember correctly. After the interviews in the morning, they say you are not being evaluated so if you have to go home that day you can probably just let them know you have to leave and it would probably be fine. I flew out the next day to give myself more time to explore Minneapolis.
