Not that I’m aware of....at least none since first of the year; in prior cycles some OOS admissions were documented in late December, although no posts of this happening for this cycle

I believe there is NO deposit requirement to secure your spot. You just have to accept the offer on mySTAR. Based on the mail I received after my pre-match, mandatory orientation begins on July 10th and classes start early this year on July 15th

Has anyone received information on making the account for mySTAR yet?

I received my hard copy letter of acceptance today and it stated that there is no deposit required to hold your spot. It does state that the Mystar info will be sent soon and that everything needs to be done within a couple of weeks, so if you don't hear something within a week, we should probably call. The hardcopy letter has some other URL's in it that you can visit to find out more.

Negative. Does anyone in this limbo know whether or not UTMB accepts letters of intent?

I did it a minute ago. I tried the first time and was told there was an error. I refreshed the page and logged in just fine the second time.

Can confirm these dates. Also, current/past transcripts from all universities need to be turned in (includes courses in progress) by March 15th, which is right around the corner, so don't let it sneak past anyone.

    Mine worked.

Hello everyone! Current MS1 here. Congratulations to everyone who matched to UTMB last week!!! And to those of you who are on the waitlist, don't lose hope. I know MANY of my classmates came off the waitlist up to just a few weeks before classes started (we started very late August).

I'm happy to answer any questions y'all may have, just shoot me a message or post here and I'll try to help to the best of my ability :)

Also the official Facebook group is up now as "University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Galveston - Class of 2023" but you do need a UTMB e-mail to join.

It may be that the last 2 years they have had to lose major amounts of class time due to hurricane activity and flooding. During Hurricane Harvey (2017) Galveston Island was under an evacuation order and the med school closed for about 2 weeks. In 2018 there was no hurricane but some major rainstorms with flooding.
Houston schools also closed for the same reasons during Hurricane Harvey.
Living on the Gulf Coast is beautiful but at times "thrilling" :wideyed:

When I looked at past years I was think "great, I graduate in May and don't have to be in Galveston until August, that gives me plenty of time to sell my house and find a new one," then I saw they were starting in July and realized we were going to have to really hustle to make the transition happen.

So, if they are starting early and then there are no major adverse events, I wonder what happens with the "extra" time?

I'm a current MS1 and was recently discussing this with our curriculum representative. Do not quote me, but rumor is that they are adding a 5 week "ramp up" course before jumping into anatomy. I am not sure what all this entails, but I did make a recommendation to include more direction for going into the anatomy lab. If I get more explicit information on this, I'll be happy to share. Previously they've done a PREP course for a limited number of students, and it very well could be they are extending this to all students moving forward...we are all waiting to hear what is coming down the pipeline. :)

same here. I saw that the numbers of members joined the group gradually went up. They probably just didn’t get to us yet. maybe administration hasn’t provided them with a full email list?

+1 I did notice that there were only a few new members added over the last 30 days so my guess is the admins are probably not super active. I have some burning questions I want to ask, so I hope they approve us soon :D

Depends on what you're specifically asking about. Lectures and PBL are casual. Anytime you're at a site visit, in the standardized patient (SP) center, and sometimes in the hospital it's business casual (scrubs are appropriate at other times). On a rare occasion, you might find yourself dressing business professional, but that's more likely due to personal preference.

The members that are being added right now are just people that are already current students here. I think the admins are waiting on the list of accepted students' new emails, so they should be adding y'all when they get that list, hopefully this week.

I was told by LaTanya Neely, Director of Recruitment, that a new class is being added to the already existing curriculum. It is mostly meant for clinical skills like scribing from what I remember. Also, PREP will still be a separate training for certain students.

White Coat Ceremony and the rest of our classes are supposed to have no other scheduling changes.

That's what I remember her saying. It's not the only focus/point of the class but I don't remember any other examples she gave. I just remember it was to boost our clinical knowledge and skills

They've been really hounding the current MS1s with learning to give oral presentations and writing HPIs because in previous years, UTMB students have not done well on those when at their clinics/rotations. So I imagine that's what they meant by scribing/other clinical skills.

I think that's it for now.. I believe in May, we get the info to submit shot records, insurance , and drug screening!

Also.. does anyone know anything about the "quest" program? I've seen that mentioned before in previous threads

Long is the only school which has stated that all who interviewed but didn’t match go on a wait list. Most schools winnow it down a bit.

The email says about 150 are placed in the pool. But also that as the cycle goes on and people in the pool choose other schools and withdraw their applications the pool gets smaller.

Because 90% of the class is in state and therefore “matched”....the only substantial movement for IS at UTMB is likely from a result of Baylor admits (either direct or trickledown from another Texas school) or AMCAS winnowing to attend a top 10-20 school that comes calling....with the nice price in Texas very few will move...applicants who can get these schools are also perhaps a bit less likely to have matched at UTMB (vs for example Southwestern which probably has a bit more WL movement). Obviously just my opinion.....

I’ve heard Tamu offers ~ 40 off of the waitlist and long and McGovern offer ~ 30-60 off of the waitlist, don’t know if those are 100% true but thought utmb would be close to those schools in terms of movement

The 20 answers inside a standard Magic 8 Ball are:

    ● It is certain.
    ● It is decidedly so.
    ● Without a doubt.
    ● Yes - definitely.
    ● You may rely on it.
    ● As I see it, yes.
    ● Most likely.
    ● Outlook good.
    ● Yes.
    ● Signs point to yes.
    ● Reply hazy, try again.
    ● Ask again later.
    ● Better not tell you now.
    ● Cannot predict now.
    ● Concentrate and ask again.
    ● Don't count on it.
    ● My reply is no.
    ● My sources say no.
    ● Outlook not so good.
    ● Very doubtful.

I know it's killing y'all to wait longer. But there is no overall answer.

10-15 is just an estimate and can vary greatly year to year. Don't get caught up too much in that number as I'm almost certain more than 15 in the current first year class were made offers off the alternate list. People don't always like to be vocal about that information (both schools and individual students).
