2020-2021 Hawaii (Burns)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Those few of you who have received decisions already, I have a question. After you received the notice of file closure, how much time passed before you received those decisions?
Yeah, it was like a week-ish.

For anyone who has done the 2 zoom interviews, what kind of questions did they ask? Is it formal/informal? Interviewing on the 16th and Jan 29.

I have only done the first interview with an MS4, my interview with the admissions director is in 2 days. Having said that, I would agree with what has been stated previously that the interview is more conversational. Without giving away any specifics, they will ask you very typical med school interview questions. My interviewer used my responses as segways to other questions or as talking points for new subjects, if that makes sense. Ultimately, I didnt find the experience overly intimidating and I was surprised that an entire hour and 15 minutes had elapsed by the time I was done! I hope that helps!

Hey everyone, I’m definitely late to the party but I’m excited for everyone who is currently having interviews/has already been accepted! To add some data to the forum, I just completed my second interview last week. I’m OOS, LizzyM 74.8. I’m curious if anyone could touch on what might constitute as “strong ties” to Hawaii, other than having lived there at some point. I definitely have some but I am not sure if they would be considered “strong.” I doubt whatever answer I get will ease my nerves over getting accepted/rejected (Hawaii is in my top 2 for sure, if not my top choice), but I’d appreciate some feedback!

+1 I am also OOS and have a very similar Lizzy M (74.9)! I would also be interested in hearing opinions on strength of ties to Hawaii. I have many relatives who live in the state, as well as a variety of other connections to Hawaii, and I would consider these moderate to strong ties, but thats just my opinion.

Well, they are definitely stronger than mine, in all honesty "moderate" would probably be generous in describing mine, but one can hope!

Has anyone on the interview waitlist received an interview yet? I was placed on this list a little over a month ago and was wondering if we could expect any movement. Thanks!

Any feedback on what to expect for the third interview? Have mine on the 29th

Third? I only had two interviews, one with a MS4 and one with the Admissions Director

For those who heard back after your interview, what was the time between interview and admission results?

I think it was mentioned previously that some decisions were given back approximately 7-8 days upon receipt of the file closure email. However i believe you will only hear back before March if your application was scored as a 9 or 10 by the JABSOM adcom. In other words, you will hear back a decision quicker if your application is stellar

I see, I guess a better question I should be asking is how long after the interview did they receive notice of file closure. Additionally, do you know where I can find more information about that 9/10 scoring by JABSOM adcoms?

Just wrapped up mine today. I won't go into specifics as others had mentioned. This interview felt very conversational. It was the first school I've interviewed with and I felt a lot more anxiety with the MS4 interview than I did with the Adcoms member.

The admissions director mentioned that each member of the adcom reads your app individually, scores it 1-10, and then all of the scores are averaged together to give your composite score. After this, I believe they read your application as a group. The exact point system they use is likely confidential. I received the notice of file closure about a week after my final interview.

Thanks for clarifying this. I didn't get a chance to meet with the admissions director for my final interview as they started spreading it across different AdCom members. Glad to know I may expect things within the next two weeks, or by March.

For mine I received notice of file closure the same day as my last interview, so it may vary.

Does file closure have to do with you being accepted? As in if it gets closed quicker you have worse chances?
I dont think there is really any way to disprove or verify that, but I highly doubt that its an indicator of acceptance/rejection. I think the time probably just varies based on the availability of the adcom and how quickly they complete their meetings for applicant review

I hope not lol but I think it just means someone had the time to check that everything was complete in your file - interview notes, headshot, etc.

Anyone who has interviewed - I'm leaning towards just a regular suit and nice shirt but have seen others say they wore an aloha shirt. Thoughts?

I wore a suit, but I heavily considered wearing an island print shirt.

Got the file closure email after 1.5 weeks

I got waitlisted for an interview, not rejected, a few months ago from Hawaii, which I'm calling a win because I have no ties to Hawaii other than an interest/passion working in Indigenous health and rights. Did anyone else get that? I'm kind of curious if anything will come of it, or if its getting late in the cycle now to be offered an interview.

For those who are curious, I completed my final interview with an AdCom member on 1/25 and received notice of file closure today 1/29. Your final interviewer is supposed to take a picture/screenshot of you for record-keeping purposes. My interviewer forgot to do that and an admissions specialist reached out asking me to send a headshot. I thought the final interview went really well, and I hope to hear back soon. I'll update everyone with a timeline of my application once I get a final decision.

Are you IS?

Anyone on pre-II hold hear anything yet? I'm wondering if they will accept pre-II updates...

For those already accepted, how much is the deposit for admission?

Apologies if this was already mentioned, but do we know when in March decisions are supposed to be released for interviewed applicants?

Jk it says 3/26 in the file closure email

It seems like decisions start coming out around mid March based off the last couple years' threads

They typically come out the day before match day, which this year is March 19, so possibly around the 18th. We are in a pandemic though, so things may change 😅

Congratulations! Did you interview recently or are they starting to release all the admission decisions? Seems a little early to be considered mid March but I am just eager to hear back
