So here is my take on letter of intents….
In the 2019-2020 cycle I had applied for admission (I’ve applied more times that I’d like to admit. I have shared with a few people on here my story so that they have an understanding because I wrote about my story this year in my secondary. I’m not comfortable sharing publicly though). Sorry for the weird, but during the 2019-2020 cycle I had submitted my app the first day, completed the secondary immediately, and had not heard anything back. In October, I decided I wanted to try my luck with a letter of intent (after reading Homeskools post about LOI). I had no acceptances so I had no leverage and I didn’t think anything would come from it. I say this because I don’t want to falsely inflate hope. So I sent an email explaining why I thought LMU-DCOM would be the right fit for me. Here’s the catch, I’m in state, 99% of my family including 3rd and 4th level cousins reside in TN, so I highlighted location was the most relevant factor of school selection for me and being able to have a supportive environment for me should I have a bad day (because we are all humans, and will have a bad day). I had no experience shadowing a DO, mainly because I only had one DO in my town and his office manager never forwarded my messages to him. So I couldn’t use shadowing as leverage so I talked about part of my story in the letter of intent and why it was important to me (think of the opioid problem that is huge in TN). To my surprise I received an interview invite 4 days later.
I mentioned earlier how the seat is yours to lose at the interview. That’s because I lost the seat at that interview. I fumbled on my words, I had a hard time hearing one of my interviewers, and my anxiety got the best of me. My interview was the perfect example on how to fail at an interview. I knew I lost the seat before I even left the interview room based on one of the comments they made to me, it wasn’t bad or mean, it just showed that I had failed.
So, letter of intent, do they work? I can’t say with certainty but my timing seems to suggest it helped during that cycle. Should you get your hopes up if you send one? No, that’s the unfortunate truth. It will crush you more if you get the false belief that it worked for n=1. I think my story helped me that year, and as others have stated they are huge on the Appalachia mission. Which for me I lived my entire life here. Should you send one? It depends on your situation and your story. Worst thing they can tell you is that your application is still under review.
EDIT: Now updated with a Spring Supplement!
