2022-2023 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I logged in, she saw me, rolled her eyes. “I would like to mention my time teaching other students while in school. Previously, I wanted to be a professor, and so…” She had that stone face (like the Easter island statues 🗿) and was silent. She didn’t ask any questions, and I gave her time to ask them. And so I continued about my time with the food pantry, to which she disconnected the call. She may have just had an off day.

I legit failed my II here. My last station hated my guts and disconnected the call with three minutes to spare while I was in mid sentence during my answer. To that extent, I think the school values the person holistically.
During my last interview, the person asked me, "How can hens lay eggs without a rooster?" (I sell chickens). I told him, "Well, chickens laying eggs is kind of like a woman's menstrual cycle. We just decided to eat their eggs one day." He yelled, "DISGUSTING, next topic!" Later on, I found out he was the chair of the admissions.

I find it deeply troubling that so many people have mentioned a poor interview experience at UTMB. I know we shouldn't necessarily weight the interview day experience heavily since a few people can't tell you what an entire campus of faculty and students will be like, but it's tough to ignore the number of posts I've seen on SDN regarding strange experiences at UTMB interviews.

It's insane to me that she hung up on you in that fashion. And an eye-roll?? From staff? Just bonkers.

On interview day, I was told the school doesn’t care about our stats since we got the interview. They just wanted to see how well we conduct ourselves. Does anyone know the likelihood of lower stat applicants actually receiving an acceptance or how much it plays in an admissions decision? I saw 0 % of people with my gender/score/race matriculated from TMDSAS data last year, and I’ve been kinda nervous.
To answer your question, I got a pre-match offer on 10/21, I interviewed on 8/26. My LM score is 66 (3.4 cGPA, 3.3 sGPA, 3.6 grad GPA, 511 MCAT, 1st Quartile Casper). So yes, I genuinely believe that once you are interviewed your stats don't play as much of a role in getting a pre-match or acceptance down the line from UTMB. As far as "likelihood" or "admissions statistics" I can't tell you what the grand scheme is but it's definitely possible! Keep your head up, grab some popcorn, and wait.

keep in mind all prematch offers haven't come out yet and match day hasn't even happened! I definitely have had my moments of overthinking things I said or did in interviews but thats what I have been telling myself to keep the nerves at bay. UTMB seems to evaluate pretty holistically and you just have to trust in that you did your best and the admissions saw that in you too. I know that sounds cliche but it really has helped me! best of luck

Anyone have any guesses on when they're gonna release their next wave of prematches? I thought they were gonna release some this past Friday but it doesn't look like they did

My guess would be bi-weekly (every other week). That or they'll randomly trickle in going forward, if i'm a betting man
Yeah, it looks like they did it every two weeks last cycle, at least for the first 6 weeks starting with Friday 10/22! I'm personally rooting for you all to hear something this coming Friday, right on schedule!

Fwiw Skep, I really enjoyed my interview experience at UTMB and thought everyone was baseline cordial, the vast majority of my stations were great. I really appreciated their stated perspective on being anti-racist (first time I’ve heard that in Texas!!) and fostering diversity/inclusion in future physicians. I don’t want to invalidate anyone else’s experience, but I wanted to assure you that it is not the whole picture.

I really appreciate this! It's great to hear about positive experiences because I think UTMB has a lot to offer prospective students! Appreciate you!

Their page says Casper Duet is required for your secondary to be considered complete but I've received and confirmed my interview invite for this school despite not having done Duet. Not really sure what to make of that. Do I still need to do it?
I am in the same situation. They said Duet is a pilot for UTMB and will not be used during the screening process. I have done my interview in October. I wonder if I still need to do the Duet now.

When I researched the CASPer requirements this May for the TMDSAS schools, there were 3 schools which listed CASPer and Duet as required.
These 3 are UTMB, Texas A&M, and UT Tyler.

SHSU is the only TMDSAS school requiring all 3 components (Snapshot is the third component).

As Nike would say, "Just Duet". Super quick and no prep needed.

I had a similar experience. The UTMB interview was actually very engaging and fun.

How long did the MMI last for you guys? And about how many stations was it? In the email it said the MMI should last about 2 hours and that just sounds crazy long to me lol.

It might sound like a long time but MMIs go by really fast. They're always just a couple minutes between stations and you use that time to deliberate, the rest of the time you're giving your lil answers and taking follow-up questions. So you're way too busy thinking and talking to notice the time!
Okay that definitely calms my nerves! Was there like 10+ stations? Or less lol

UTMB's MMI was definitely one of the longer ones I've had, but its not that bad.

got a rejection email, and this was my only interview this cycle. Feeling down. I also didn't know texas schools gave out Rs before match day?? could there have been a red flag?
Hi, just wanted to reach out and say I ALSO got a post Interview Rejection from UTMB, so you are not alone. When I asked them to elaborate on some reasons how they came to their decision they basically told me to eff off and ask again in like March. Like, thanks for nothing I guess :') I think I must have just interviewed badly since I was very new to MMI but it would have been nice to confirm lol.

Wow, didnt realize UTMB is doing rejections before match day. @wysdoc Have they done this in previous years?

I am not exactly sure either, I figured maybe it was just me and they found a big red flag or I just had a terrible interview day or my interviewers were tired or something bc the vibes were NOT it. I was one of the last candidates for a group of very clearly tired and ready-to-go-home Interviewers who seemed like they could not wait to be done with me, lol. I guess I was not energetic enough to keep them captivated. So maybe that had something to do with it too. I am generally super chill and maybe they are looking for "energetic" and "captivating." I also think my answer to one of the ethical/philosophical/cultural stations was ill-recieved.

it could be a lot of things, but at the end I am not too hung up on this, this is one school and its early enough for me to get other offers :')

Got the same email! For those wondering the interview actually went really well. All my interviewers were very chill. One was pretty stone faced and showed little expression at first but he loosened up as we talked more. I was definitely nervous because this was my first MMI but the nervousness went away as I went on. All my med student interviewers were cool as well. Overall a very chill school.

Anyone have an idea of when OOS applicants should hear back? Is it just random since we don’t have the match?

For all those worried about their MMI experience, I'd say mine was pretty dry and uncomfortable compared to my other interviews. For the "Sell Yourself" section my interviewer just read the suggested topics verbatim and said nothing else.. I just gave my response and he moved on to the next question.

I felt like I didn't do the best job representing myself and felt strange after the interview process, but I prematched in the first batch after interviewing 9/1, though I totally felt like I failed hard on the interviews.

I think part of it may just be growing pains transitioning from long form interviews to MMIs. Either way I wouldn't stress too much about the actual interview day. But who knows 😅

Almost my exact same experience lol. I'd seriously taken UTMB off my list at one point because I believed there was little chance of any sort of acceptance. Then I prematch the first day.

No rhyme or reason with this process. I say do the very best you can in every situation, order your rank list just as you'd truly like to attend, and let it all happen as it will.

Any predictions on when the next round of prematches will be released?
I thought it woulda been the previous Friday based on last year's pattern, but no dice. I figure anything can happen now, but this Friday would be nice, unless the are planning to do a batch every month instead of every two weeks.

I can second this, thought I absolutely BOMBED my MMI. My first station was my first interview ever and I was stuttering through the entire thing. I got better after that but I will tell you at least 2 of my interviewers probably thought to themselves “what the heck is this kid talking about”. My answers were pretty out there which may have made me memorable but it didn’t seem like my interviewers were very receptive to them.

My sell yourself was a total vibe though. I didn’t really talk about why UTMB specifically rather I talked about myself and ended up being able to relate to the interviewer a lot.

Goes to say you can mess up 1 or even 2 stations (or think you did because were the worst critics of ourselves and will generally judge ourselves poorly) and you can still be fine
