2024-2025 UCLA (Geffen)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have you received their email acknowledging your primary application? (I got my secondary very soon after that)
Yeah. They sent me that email 2 months ago now when I first submitted my primary. Haven't heard from them since.

I forgot to mention that UCSD sent their secondary to me 2 days ago. Perhaps it might take a few more days because of how much more UCLA likes to screen.

Hey all!

I took my MCAT 7/26 and got my score back 8/26 (score: 509). 1500+ research w/ Nature pub; 1000+ clinical; X-factor: charity org founder for my ethnic country raising over $5 million. Part of over 7 research labs and president of a few minority pre-health orgs. 4.00 cGPA at a UC undergrad school (hence CA in-state). URM.

I still haven't received a secondary yet. Is this normal? Should I be a little worried? I was hoping to get my secondary the first week of September but they might be backlogged, so I'm not quite sure.
they holistically screen & say that everyone's timeline looks different. given the later MCAT result I wouldnt be surprised if you were to get your secondary later. no point in worrying -- you're in the running until you get an R! good luck.

Thank you!!

A few minutes after your reply, I received an invite to one of their info sessions about the medical school. Hopefully must mean I'm still in the running!

I also have a 509. They sent me a secondary it just took time. They have alot of apps to sort through so sadly there is a delay

Does anyone know where the link to join the main interview panel is for tomorrow?

On the application portal under web interview there is a "start interview" button. It says we should click that at the noted Interview Time. I'm guessing it redirects us to the interview.

Isn’t that for the individual interview ? What about the beginning part ? Like the introduction and all?

is UCLA screen for secondaries just a stats screen? or do they actually review your app

N=1 but I got the secondary immediately after getting a confirmation email for them having received the primary, so I would say it's probably a stats (and maybe activity hours) screen, but nothing requiring a human to look at your app.

No. Adcoms receive your written application before you're even verified. This is conjecture but not unfounded, If you applied to UPitt and you sent your letters to them before being verified, you'll see your portal says the letters arrived the day you sent them, not the day you were verified. This explains why you can't edit your essays after submitting but before verification.

I don’t think this is true I think there’s some type of metric cut off that qualifies you for a secondary and if you don’t meet it then they holistically review your app. Last year I added ucla on amcas after I was already verified and received their secondary an hour later so unless they are reviewing every single submitted amcas application I don’t think this theory is true

Should I e-mail the admissions office I haven't received a secondary or R from UCLA? Submitted primary 6/27, confirmation of primary application received 7/11.

UCLA hasn’t sent out pre secondary Rs to my knowledge but considering they say there’s a screen I unfortunately don’t know if it would be worth it to email

Well, I did give hardcore evidence schools get your written application before you're even verified. If you applied to UPitt and submitted your letters before your verification, you can see for yourself.

There is this guy on reddit two years ago who got a pre secondary R with high stats. So I guess maybe they briefly review your app and not just stats? Not entirely sure honestly

That further makes me suspect schools get your written app before it's verified. Either that or they're somehow insanely fast at reading written apps.

I feel that they must review your app somewhat. My metrics are low more than what you expect and I received a secondary and OOS. For me I’m a nontrad with 218 credits so my gpa won’t move much so they do look at your app to an extent. At least metric wise they must look at it in a deeper sense.

I agree, it’s definitely not JUST a stats review. They may be looking at apps before they’re verified. Because I’ve had friends with low stats get secondaries and those with higher stats not get it.

I agree that schools may get your app before it’s verified but I just don’t think that’s how ucla’s secondary turnaround time is so quick. Again, I added ucla to my amcas and had a secondary within a few hours last time so unless they are extremely fast I think it’s more so a combination of metric cutoffs and if you don’t meet the cutoff at first then they scan your app more holistically to decide if they want to extend a secondary. I also have heard people with institutional actions on their record may be screened out more quickly but again, none of us are in the room where it happens lol

They screen hard for IAs as well, your high stat friend may not have received a secondary due to an IA

Unverified rumor and I don't think you can verify that.

Literally why I said that nobody is in the room where it happens lol. Nobody can verify anything on this thread since we aren’t on admissions committee

He didn’t have an IA to my knowledge but he could have not told me! Based on my experiences though, I really don’t think their screen is stat based.

I hear that their screen is solely based on how well you can sing Pink Pony Club and rock a cowboy hat

Hi all, is receiving a confirmation email of primary a good sign? Does it mean I passed screening?

I have an IA and low scores both in gpa and mcat (500 mcat 3.0 GPA) and received a secondary from UCLA so it is possible to get one!

If you're ORM then you truly are the hero SDN needs but not the one we deserve.

Man I'm still waiting on a secondary after 2 months, I thought it was my IA holding me back from getting one, feel like this is just a soft R at this point

Does anyone know if UCLA's interviews are open file? Thank you!
Yes it was. But still be prepared to treat it as closed in case the person interviewing you didn’t have much time to delve into your application.

out of curiosity (I have not received an II lol), what style is the UCLA interview? panel, one-on-one, group, traditional, MMI, etc?

i got a II and wanted to confirm format. i know ucla in the past did MMI's, but now is it just two trad interviews? should we expect them to have more ethical dilemma q's than typical trad interviews given they were mmi previously?
