I've been interested in ophthalmology since I started med school. I did some ophtho research between M1 and M2 and did one poster presentation, but no publications. I just got my step 1 score back, and I got a 240. I know this is a solid score for most specialties, but I've heard about how competitive ophthalmology is. At this point, is it worth it to continue aiming for ophtho, or should I start looking at more "realistic" options? Sorry if this is a really basic question for this forum. Thanks!

Thank you both so much. You have no idea how good it is to hear this from people who know what they're talking about.

Still open to more opinions of course!

My Step 1 was a 233. People mach fairly frequently with scores in the 220s even. Its an important test, but it's also just one test. So many other factors go into how strong of a candidate you are/can become.

240 will get u past the cutoff screeners where the programs will then actually look at the rest of your application.
