Hi, I'd really appreciate any responses. I feel a bit lost in picking schools even though I have looked at MSAR, so I figured studentdoc will be a good resource.

I am worried that I won't get into any schools in Texas because of my MCAT score, so I have been thinking of applying out of state to increase my chances. However money is tight, so I can only afford to apply to a few out-of-state schools (3-4). Do I have a good enough chance in Texas to not bother with applying out of state? If not, which out of state schools should I apply to? Thanks!

My stats:
Texas Resident
MCAT: 28R
GPA: 3.82
Activities: strong letters of rec, various volunteer events, psych research, teacher assistant

Thanks again!!

looking at the texas schools in MSAR, a 28 only looks far below the average for southwestern and Baylor, and those have pretty wide spreads too.

OP, I wouldn't apply to the ultra competitive Texas schools. Chances of getting in would be very slim. However, I do reccomend that you apply to at least 5 out of state schools on top of all the UT schools. Try these for starts:

Wayne State
Creighton
Drexel
RFU/CMS
Albany Med

I have a friend who just got in off the waitlist to UTSW with a 28 and 3.75. You'll get in to some TX schools

i think you should get in somewhere in tx, thats a good gpa

Dude. Texas LOVES it's own people.
UT Galveston is showing a median 28/3.73 so that's on target
Texas Tech is showing a median 29/3.5 so that's on target
A&M is showing a median 29/3.79 so that's on target

UT Houston is showing 30/3.58
UT San Antonio is showing 30/3.46 (!)

UT Southwest and Baylor have really high MCATs...so I don't know what to tell you there but you should definitely apply, they are both very Texas heavy
75% of Baylor class in state
82% of UT Southwest in State

All my #'s are from the MSAR '07-08

I am not sure why you are freaking with 28/3.75 those numbers are competitive considering the MSAR figures.

GET OFF SDN. The stats here are ridiculous. For texas schools (apart from UTSW and Baylor) a 28 will more than likely get you in somewhere. You're GPA is well above the national & texas average. What is your undergrad? A&M and UT both have really good track records...

I'm a senior at A&M.

You will be fine as long as you have strong letters of rec and average to above average ECs. You will definately get in somewhere. Apply early and everything will work out. Good Luck!

We have similar stats. I think you will be accepted somewhere....

What about me? 3.48 undergrad GPA, 3.40 science, 29Q MCAT, strong letters of rec, good EC's, good PS

What are your ECs?

You are going to need to apply widely and to at least 20 well chosen schools. Those are pretty average numbers.

To the OP.

So far, I already have an interview at UTMB with a 26 and a 3.64

I am a TX resident and I have good ECs... they look at it all.

WHOOP!

Who did you do Psyc research with? Do you have any clinical experience?

I think you should be okay in Texas. If you want to add some OOS schools, look at Temple and Wake Forest

I am not from Texas, but I applied to 90% OOS with 3.6/29R and got accepted (and turned down other interviews because I got in where I wanted to go). You'll get in. Those stats are great.

Most Texas schools like the high GPA over high MCATs. Like others said, you have a high likelihood of being accepted. But, I would still suggest that you apply to a total of 15+ schools. You're competitive, but that's far from an auto-admit. You never know who's applying in your class as well as how many spaces will be available due to the various Rice-Baylor, UH-Baylor, and probably several other programs that offer early admissions guarantees in Texas.

Good luck.

Be happy you are not a Californian! All of our schools have average MCATs of 32 or higher (except LLU, which is very religious). In Texas, there are a few state schools with lower average MCATs (~28 or 29), and you have a major residency advantage. With a good GPA, you have a decent shot. I would also apply to...

Drexel
Temple
Penn State
Medical College of Wisconcin
Rush (maybe, residency might be a problem)
Wayne State

You should be fine with those numbers in some Texas schools. Try applying to a few OOS schools with low MCATs such as Drexel and Albany.
Best of luck,
WT
