Hi there. I am a 22 y/o Asian/Caucasian female pursuing my Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at EVMS. I am a Virginia resident.
My cGPA and sGPA from undergrad are less than impressive. I graduated from the University of Virginia with a BA in Biology with a minor in chemistry. I had a 3.45 cGPA and a 3.33 sGPA. In my current program, I have a 4.0.
My MCAT score is a 509 with a 126 in Chem, 127 in CARS, 129 in Bio, and 127 in Psych.
Activities (purposely succinct, but can elaborate if anyone needs details)
- 500+ volunteer hours (currently researching in a children's hospital and around the local community)
- 200+ research hours (currently researching in a lab at my grad school, researched in a Social Psychology lab in undergrad)
- 100+ shadowing (currently shadowing local physicians, specifically in cardiology but have seen general surgery, ophthalmology, and OB/gyn)
- Undergraduate class council for 4 years, exec. board for 3
- Interned at a free clinic during my senior year of undergrad (150+ hours)
- Went to Nicaragua for a 7-day medical brigade
- Was a peer teacher for intro bio lab and intro chemistry lecture during my sophomore year
- Was Vice President of Relations & Marketing in my sorority for two years
- Was a virtual medical scribe for 1.5 years, worked for student activities in my undergrad for 2 years
- Did AFROTC for 3 years, medically DQ'd for tearing my ACL three too many times
-- Did community service within AFROTC (Arnold Air Society) and was on Drill Team
-- Founded a local chapter of Silver Wings (civilian organization for military awareness and professionalism)
I also had to take several courses over the summer (first semester of physics/physics lab, both semesters of organic chemistry lab, one semester of organic chemistry) because of my torn ACLs (had to stay at home for rehab), and also because I had to allocate several mandatory credits and hours to AFROTC and couldn't overload my schedule. I got a 3.0 my first year, 3.6 my second and third year, and a 3.4 my fourth year. The lower GPAs I attribute to serious mental health issues my first year (I was sexually assaulted), and losing my AFROTC scholarship and having two more ACL surgeries during my fourth year. I also have no idea if I should uncover these details somewhere in my AMCAS/secondaries to explain my situation (and obviously I would show that I have grown from these obstacles, I'm stronger because of them, and not pry for pity, etc.)
I'm not sure what my chances are... I feel pretty nontraditional. I know my stats are bad, but that's why I'm getting my MS, a program that allows me to take classes with M1s to indicate that I could succeed in med school. But can they overlook such a low cGPA/BCPM? Please help me out 🙁
