Personal: In junior year towards end of semester brother almost died in home from drug overdose (he was a recovering addict, had a breakdown, and attempted suicide in home) called 911 and performed rescue breathing for 15 minutes helping to save his life. Is this PS material? I am interested in emergency medicine.

Also, my college requires a thesis in partial fulfillment of a B.S. degree. I have been looking into research on the medicinal applications of plants endogenous to Long Island. I have the option of conducting actual "bench" research over the summer while studying for the MCAT, or to write a "library" thesis, which is a compiled analysis of other studies that have been done to examine common trends about the properties of different medicinal plant families. I have come to the conclusion I should do the library thesis because I have already conducted research at BNL and am a published first author on the paper, and I need to focus 100% on priming myself for the MCAT. Is this the correct perspective or do I need another study? Do I have quite enough?

I just would like to know what I need on the MCAT to gain admission to NY med schools in the metropolitan area / LI realistically.

The CA schools that routinely interview and accept OOS students matriculated the following from the pool of OOS applicants: UCSD, 20/2551; UCLA, 21/3375; UCSF, 29/3582; USC, 40/3499; Stanford, 61/4285; Loma Linda is the only CA school besides Stanford that took a majority of its class from OOS: 93/3059.

Unless you are very accomplished applicant or have a religious mission in addition to your medical one, the Golden State is a tough nut to crack.

I'll wait for your MCAT to give a list analysis, therefore.

Depending on your MCAT there are NY schools that might interview you.

NYU will be a real stretch with your gpa.
Last year they accepted 47/1507 IS applicants, the majority accepted were actually OOS (108). The average gpa was 3.9 and the median MCAT was 36.
With your gpa, you would be looking at an MCAT score of better than 36 for a real chance at an interview. How are those practice scores ?

@gyngyn I suppose that's where the "dream" part comes in. Are interview offers only based on numbers, or do they look at the profile in its entirety before tossing someone out? Will my ECs be enough to get me in SOMEWHERE in the NYS metropolitan area (SUNY Downstate, New York Medical College, or Stonybrook/ Hofstra LI?) My interview skills are very strong.

If you have an MCAT score in range for that school, your EC's will be important. EC's do not compensate for weak numbers though.

Yes. Your practice scores should ideally be a bit above this to account for timing and surroundings.
You might need to start investigating DO schools if you are set on staying in NY (depending on the MCAT, of course).

@gyngyn Even with a 3.65 and my ECs and a 32~ MCAT I couldn't get in in NY? Is the tristate area a possibility? I definitely do not want to go to the Carribean...

If your actual MCAT is 32, there are several tri state schools that might interview you!
No one (least of all me!) wants you to go Carib.

@gyngyn But you don't feel that any schools in NY would interview me given a 3.65? According to the MSAR, I see NY schools with GPA ranges starting around 3.4-3.9, such as Stonybrook.

Of course you can get interviews with your gpa. Where you get them will depend on your MCAT.

@gyngyn Oh phew! Then all hope is not lost. I am working diligently this summer in a Kaplan MCAT course and in my own excessive studies to attempt to achieve the best score I possibly can. What are your thoughts on what I wrote about my brother... is something like that personal statement material? In addition to my shift from art to medicine?

Work on your MCAT. There is plenty of time to look at the PS!

@gyngyn hope with 507? DO is great too! But there's only 2 in NY. You think I could get a few MD interviews?

That's a 29+. MD is certainly feasible, but you are going to need to apply outside of NY as well.

@gyngyn May I ask you a more benign embarrassing question- do I include my mention of first-authorship on a 2014 publication in the description of the research in my Work/Activities section?

And my last bother to you!

Do you think that it would be worth mentioning I have a 30k following on instagram as a detail in one of my work experiences? I was a makeup artist with Estee Lauder for 5 years, and from the skills I honed there I was able to achieve an online following. If you think this is negligible I will omit it. @gyngyn

    I would not include it.
I would also delete the link in your post.
