Hi, I'm relatively new to SDN but have been unable to access any helpful in-person premed advising so any general advice/knowledge to supplement my own is appreciated!

I'm applying next year. I'm a non-trad career changer, and got a soft-science BA from a good CA undergrad a few yrs ago.

I feel as though my stats (i.e. cGPA) are borderline DO/MD, with solid EC's. As I develop school list, my main question is can I get away with purely MD applications (my preference for specialty reasons) or do I need to apply DO? Anything I can do in this next year to push towards MD?

cGPA: 3.63
sGPA: 3.94 (all premed classes in DIY post-bacc)
MCAT: 511
State of residence: California
URM?: No
Research: 3yrs in undergrad (some paid), 1 publication neuro/psych
Clinical experience: 1 yr paid Medical Assistant in private practice, 50 hrs ED volunteer
Non-clinical volunteer: 100 hrs tutoring and hospital
Shadowing: 100 hrs varied
Other work experience: Paid admin work for hospital residency program

(Very) tentative school list: All UC's, OHSU, George Washington, Georgetown, Drexel, Brown, Thomas Jefferson, Dartmouth, Some New York schools (OOS friendly?), more MD or add DO?

Thanks!

Your initial list is fine but since you are a CA resident you need many more OOS private schools. Consider adding these where your stats are competitive:
Quinnipiac
Vermont
New York Medical
Albany
Penn State
Temple
Oakland Beaumont
Western Michigan
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola
St.Louis
Creighton
Tulane
Any new private schools that open in 2017 (Seton Hall, Roseman, Henricopolis, etc.)
You are competitive for any DO school so apply to several.
