I just found out that I have a 3rd cousin doing an EM residency at Wash U. The sad thing is that I never knew that he existed before now. I know of his older brother whom I've met a couple times, but I've never met this cousin personally. He graduated from the U of Illinois School of Medicine, which is tops on my list! When I apply to medical school, would it be wise to include him as a family member (alum)? Again, I've never met him, but I'm itching to give him a call. I'd at least like to meet him before putting him down on my application as a relative. Then again, when I apply to Illinois I'd like put him down as a relative. Would that help? When appyling to medical school, is it necessarily "better" to have a relative who previously attended the school? Does it make much difference? Just curious.

Thanks

It can and does at many Private Schools, they are very fond of legacies and donations sometimes. Public schools are much less likely to care.

I think it's similar to Greek organizations, in that you're only considered a legacy if you are the child, gandchild, or sibling of a graduate of the school. Third cousin may not help. But I'd still give the guy a call. He could give you some pointers!

I agree, it seems that only good could come from calling him (nothing to lose, besides long distance). About listing him though, if they have a spot for it, sometimes they specify (immediate family, extended family, etc), if you are unsure, you can always call their adcom and ask if you should list him after you speak with him. He might have some advice too.
