So here is my story, I went to a so so university (Yale, I really wanted to go to Harvard but I didn't get in). I did pretty well and wound up getting a 4.5. Since I took so many "honors" courses they decided to make my gpa higher than a 4.0. It would have been a 5.0 but I got an A- my freshman year in double advanced quantum calculus using multivariables. I tried my hardest but the teacher was impossible 🙁 Anyway I have never gotten anything lower than an A++ since with usually a 101 average in each class. I have ok EC's but nothing that stands out. I did find a new compund that destroys every kind of cancer but since cancer is no longer the number 1 killer of americans, (Cardio disease is) I feel as if adcoms will think this discovery is second rate. Also I published in Science but the article was originally rejected from Nature. I took the MCAT my sophmore year before I finished my reqs and only got a 40. My parents were so mad at me they almost threw me out of the house :scared: So I studied real hard and was the first person ever to get a perfect score with not a single question wrong but I only got a R on the writing. I dont know what happened, I just froze on it. Anyway what do you think my chances are? Should I just apply to lower tier schools or do I actually have a chance at say VCU? Should I use the Caribbean as a back up.... oh I am so depressed 🙁

Ha ha ha, this is hilarious, Bobodr!

I think you should forget about med school and take over the MCAT subforum. The pay isn't great, but you're obviously a natural. 👍

Start packing your swim suits and sunscreen- it's off to the Caribbean w/you!

Retake the MCAT, take a higher level calculus class, then apply widely. Don't give up!

After rereading your story a few times, I've found the sentence that makes me think you might not be 100% telling the truth. The rest of your facts check out fine, though, and you should probably get in somewhere - but only if you wear a Batsuit to your interviews.

I think your situation is a little iffy. You've got that whole perfectionistic vibe going on, which can be a negative, but at the same time you seem unable to actually pull it off (as evidenced by the sub 5.0 GPA and the R on the writing sample). I think both will be seen as detractions by the adcoms.

I also agree that going into cancer research was less than wise. I mean, really, what were you thinking?

You have to remember that the adcoms have so many perfect stat candidates to choose from, and many of those are 10's in the looks department, have saved whole countries in Africa from starvation during their spring breaks, and cry tears that heal leprosy at a single touch. Why should they admit someone as clearly sub-par as you?

Don't get too discouraged, though. You can always do a post-bacc while developing the cure for diabetes.

Quite honestly,
With Stats like that I dont even think you need to go to Med School. Just show up at any random US hospital, scrub in, and start on your first transplant surgery. You'll be an natural, I can tell.

good luck.

In short, unless you are Jack Bauer, you are SCREWED! (Chuck Norris is SO early 90s people!)

I know what you mean. After the first two Nobel Prizes I just got kind of jaded. I mean, I was only in the 10th grade at the time and just couldn't imagine putting forth the work it would take to get into medical school. After MIT asked me to come on staff during my freshman year of undergrad., I thought my career had reached a high point. But then when I graduated after only a year and a half from Yale, Harvard, Brown, Cornell, and Stanford with 10 PhDs in "I'm-a-frikkin-bad-@$$-ology".

You did make one mistake though. Technically I made a 90 on the MCAT so my score is actually the highest ever. I made a 30 on each section, but the AAMC felt bad about all those others out there and just scaled mine back to 15 on each section. And I was exempt from the writing section because one of my Nobel Prizes was in literature.

Unfortunately, my ECs are my weak area as well. I found the vaccine for AIDS, but it was so effective that it was deemed "politically incorrect". For that reason, I don't know that any ADCOMS will consider it.

Its tough, but I do have some Carib schools on back up if nothing else works.

Usually its SDN rookies that start these kinds of threads, and SDN rookies respond. Whats up with you veterans? You're throwing me off here!

I'd have to read your personal statement to give you a definitive estimation of your chances.

Back up? You mean 'early decision', right? As we've all seen from recent posts, your extracurrics will come across as outlandish pranks to the adcoms. They'll say, "Cure for cancer??? Clearly this applicant won't be going into primary care!" And then they'll reject you.

Most students in this position go to the Columbia College of Surgeons and Surgeons, but they'll likewise look at you and say, "Cure for cancer??? He'll never have good enough hands to be a surgeon." And then they'll reject you.

So as far as I can tell, it's Caribbean or bust, BOBODR (or should I say, 'cure-for-cancer-wuss'?). You really should have thought ahead and done something to position yourself well for medical school. Fool.

Thanks for all the encouragment guys but I just dont think you understand. The second I came out of my mothers womb (she was a doctor, along with her mother and so on) and I saw the shiny stethoscope hanging off the lucky OB/GYN that delivered me I knew I wanted (no wanted isnt the word, must is better) to be a doctor. All through life I have felt this way. I played doctor when I was 5 and other kids were haveing wars with GI joes, I would pretend to be sick when I was in eigth grade just so I could see my doctor, in high school I started as a volunteen, I mean I could only carry x-rays from room to room but I have a secret. Sometimes I would stop and look at them and make my own diagnoses. Then compare it to the actual one, I thought this would be good practice. In college I shadowed a doctor every day of the week...just seeing those medical students in their white coats gives me an emotional orgasm ...that someday I may be a doctor 🙂 🙂 🙂 😍 😍
When I turned 21 last week I didnt go to a bar and get wasted, I was on here reading about slow waitlist movement and it made me apprehensive because even though I havent applied what happens if I get on a WL? 🙁
Thanks for your support , I really feel like you guys are my family and the only ones who understand me. 🙂

It's a tough call....that whole cancer thing was one big waste of time IMO. But try retaking the MCAT and get that writing up to a 'T'! And try to get a Nobel Prize or two if you don't get in. Reapplying as a Nobel Laurate really helps! Good luck. :luck:

It is absouletly hopeless for you. There isn't a drop of hope left. Just stop applying to medical school so you don't make the rest of us look bad ok?

(this was a good joke 👍 )

Medical School???

are you serious, I cured cancer in the 4th grade and only won 2nd place in my schools science fair. In college I focused my efforts on building a functioning human heart. After that I came up with a cure for AIDs but it was too expensive for anyone to buy. I have 6.0 from Harvard and a 45 T on the MCAT and because I created a cure for AIDs that was too expensive I was told only to apply to carribean schools (med schools for dummys) or DO schools (doctor wannabees).

I strongly urge you to consider something else, like becoming president, world class athlete, or bill gates.... seriously, you have a better chance at becoming one of these than you do at becoming a doctor. You truly have to be the best to get into medical school.

you don't have any musical talent. That's instant rejection.

Bulk up your ECs....or else you're TOAST.

Funny as this maybe, some of these stories actually ring true. I knew a girl who studied for the MCAT for two years because she wanted a perfect score, and everytime registration for the test would roll around she would postpone taking the test because she was only getting a 42. Another story is of a guy who took the MCAT got a 40 and was pissed of about it so he took it again and got a 45. These are true stories of people that I know personally. The son of my moms coworker also applied to medical school several years ago with a 3.8 GPA and a 40 MCAT and actually ended up going to a school in the carribbian. So this thread is funny because its true.

they're either crazy or lying.

Just sleep with an admissions officer. Then you're in.

I would suggest complete reconstructive surgery. If you aren't attractive, you won't even make it through the adcom door.

This part of your post is certainly possible, because there are a variety of application problems (academic honor code violations, for example) that could make an applicant unable to gain admission in the US regardless of great stats. There are some carribean places that might be inclined to overlook such issues to puff up their own stats. Bad LORs, essays, interviews could also certainly hinder someone's admissions chances regardless of numerical stats.
