    Wow!

How many of that # are just prelim slots.

That is a still a huge number....more than IM.

I posted this a couple other times. Last year there were 512 unfilled surgery spots and only 68 were categorical, the rest were prelim. We will find out tomorrow how many are prelim vs categ. this year.

Is general surgery getting more competitive? When is the final "Unfilled programs" list available on Scutwork? Any news on Ortho results?
Congrats to all who matched and the best of luck to those who will scramble. I will be in one of those positions next year at this time! <img border="0" alt="[Clappy]" title="" src="graemlins/clappy.gif" />

According to my calculations--58 out of the 469 surgery positions are categorical. Hmmm..

There have always been heaps of Prelim Surgery positions available - when you have a choice, why would you choose a Surgical year over a Medicine one?

The vast majority of those positions are Preliminary, not Categorical. I've heard a variety of estimates but it seems that there are fewer Categorical spots than last year.

I'm not sure this reflects a more competitive field but rather PDs getting smarter - many were caught off guard last year by the decrease in popularity and didn't rank deep enough and ended up unfilled.

In the Canadian match this year there were only 2 unfilled general surgery positions! THat's the fewest unfilled spots ever.
