Seriously.....good luck guys. This is what you've all been working for.

I'm so excited for Match Day, and I'm only a first-year....haha. I'm going to finish my micro lab early and go watch the festivities at noon!

Good luck all!!

And for those who don't totally understand how it works, can you explain it to us first years?

Basically, its the Texas match process for med school, but applied to residency programs.....or vice versa...i confused myself.

You interview at various programs across the country, then rank them 1, 2, 3 (i'm not sure how many choices you actually get, but i think its 3). One the monday before match day (I.E. this past monday the 13th), you find out if you have matched to one of your top 3 choices....then you actually find out the actual program on match day (Thursday, I.E. tomorrow).

On monday, if you do not match, then you are in the scramble...basically trying to desperately find a residency to get into. Sometimes you don't/can't match into the specialty of your choosing and are limited in your choices...definitely sucks to be in the scramble...no fun at all.

I think you can rank as many as you want (not just 3). The only thing is that you must have been interviewed at a hospital, or else you cannot rank it.

I know for ortho and stuff it is routine for people to rank like 10-15. Maybe it isn't unlimited, but it certainly is more than 3.

so the residency program finds out you wanted them and then they choose if they want you? do they discuss it among each other is is everyone totally on their own? what if two schools want the same person...then does it go to the one the student ranked higher? i assume most programs takes several people, right?

so if someone isn't matched, might another school still take them even if it wasn't on the student's list?

what if no school wanted a certain student? is it possible not to get into any residency program?? 😱

how many hospitals does a student interview at? so does a student apply for several programs and a hospital picks who they want to interview? Is it possible to get no interviews? is that how it works?

sorry for all the questions, but i want to understand the process before i have to go thru it.

As for all your questions, i dont know for sure. I'm assuming that each residency program has a certain number of spots (I.E. Program A has 10 spots and program B has 30 spots). You interviewed at both programs and rank program A #1 and Program B #2....these are sent to the central office (i can't remember the name, but its an organization like AAMC for example)

Now, the different programs will go through their list of interviewed studetns and come up with a list of students who were accepted to the program. Their list might be huge, even though they are taking a small class size. (I.E. Program A submits a list to this organization of 100 accepted students...even though their class size is 10 spots).

Now this central organization matches these two things up...i'm not sure which takes preference, but i'm assuming student list does. So...you ranked 1) Prog A and 2) Prog B. Now, Program A will go through their ranked list of 100 students until they get 10 who ranked them the highest. and so on and so on.

Its not too too complicated, but its harder to explain it online than in person.

ok, i think that's sort of how i thought it was run; i just didn't know it was some central office making the decisions, now tha tmakes sense, otherwise i couldn't see how it all worked out in the end. thanks.

Thanks guys. Looking forward to it.

Good luck to you all. The years tick by faster than you might think...

I was told that people who don't match receive an email before match day. Is this true?

So what else do you do as a 4th year besides interview and fill out matchlists? It sounds like the m.s. equiv. of senior year in college/hs.

Yeah, I think that they receive and email or phone call ahead of time stating that they are going to have to "scramble" for the unmatched open spots.

Hi all - thanks for the good wishes... I'm finding it pretty hard to sleep tonight and found my way in here... go to the NRMP.org site for all the nitty gritty but some answers for you:

For the less competitive stuff you send your application to 15-30 programs and interview at 8-12... unless during your interview you absolutely do not want to be there - they all go on your list...

You can rank as many as you want but there is an extra charge after 15...

some of the really competitive stuff you might end up applying to 100 places but you still probably won't do more than 20-30 interviews (if you're lucky enough to get that many and can afford the travel)

you make your rank list and the Res. Programs make theirs... programs might not rank everyone they interview but they usually rank at least 4-5 for every spot they have (usually more) the lists are due in Mid Feb and then you WAIT and WAIT and WAIT.... :scared:

A computer program (some say its a commadore 64!) "matches" everyone and spits out some result...

The second week in march you get a bunch of official looking emails from NRMP and ERAS that will make you nervous but they are just form emails that they send to EVERYONE just in case you have to scramble you'll know the process (I'm telling you this so you won't freak out when you see them like I did!) ... Match week: Monday at noon we could log into NRMP and see the "Congratulations you have matched" message (or the less exciting alternative which fortunately I did not see) - you also get an email but that can get delayed (mine came around 1pm but some came as late as 8pm) I *think* that your dean finds out earlier that morning and you might get a call before noon if its bad news... If you do have to scramble that starts Tues at noon and it sounds like it can be pretty painful (have you ever tried to get front row seats for a concert tour when all the venues go on sale simultaneously?) Finally Thursday you find out "where" - if you don't want to face anyone, you can wait until 1pm to check on line but most schools give you your results at noon - these processes seem to vary for every school.. my day for tomorrow has the following plan:

11:30 meet in the Auditorium with most of the class and lots of spectators (I'm actually bringing my mom but that's not really normal!) have a few words from our dean with some other stuff that I probably won't hear...
12:01 we can get our envelopes - they have them all on one big table so you can pick it up and open it where and when you want - usually right there but I might try to face the corner just in case.... :luck:
After all the hugging and phone calls etc - they are giving us lunch and champagne (they sent info to our parents and had them buy us each a bottle - if they wanted to)

the rest of the afternoon who knows.... but then...

9 pm class party at a bar downtown - the school gave our class $750 (to add the money from student council) for 100% completion on some survey they wanted us to do... so there will be lots of free drinks and munchies 😀

As far as what do 4th years do???? yeah - senioritis is not even the word!!! (disclaimer: not all schools provide the freedom that mine does and not all students slack off like I have been!)
Most of the "work" I needed to do this year was: 1 month ED, 1 month Sub-internship and take Step II - I finished by November and have been doing pretty easy electives since then - with lots of time off for interviewing... (aka pretty much nothing!) Yeah, I'm a little scared to start internship with my clinical skills pretty rusty but I'm sure I'll have no choice but to get caught back up pretty quickly!

OK - I'm going to try and get to sleep now... your time will come soon enough.. its amazing how fast time has flown!

Good luck 4th years!!!!

Hope you all end up at your first choices! 🙂

You actually find out the monday before match day. So you find out on monday (I.E. this past monday was the 13th) as to whether or not you matched to any program. On thursday (I.E. today), you find out which program you matched to and will be attending for residency.

Hahahaha, if this is true it would only add to the whole effect of the match and medicine in general.

congratulations to all the 4th years!!

i'm so envious...i'll be in class all day long!

congrats to everyone who matched, and good luck to everyone in the scramble~!

It's Match Time on the East Coast. Good luck guys !!! :luck: Hope you all get your #1 choice. 🙂

Is it noon in each timezone, or all at once?

I believe it's noon in each time zone. I know my friend's match at UT-Houston a few years ago was a noon.

:luck: :luck: may all that hard work pay off today!!
