Hi! Thanks for the click.
I am a first time applicant, URM (Latino), & Florida resident. I am a little concerned that of my 17 MD schools, I won't find myself an acceptance, and I am considering attempting DO schools too. I have my two state schools on my AACOMAS list, but I would love suggestions for more!
Stats:
-Chemical engineering major + biomedical engineering minor - graduated in 4y
-Master's student in biomedical engineering
-First-generation American (Cuban parents are refugees)
-Worked since I was 15 - I will mention the work I've been involved in since college (solutions specialist 1y & tutor 3y) (700h & 2500h, respectively) (will work until matriculation at current job as tutor)
-40h community volunteer service
-Various club involvements (played ultimate for 2y, president of chemical engineering honor society)
-350 volunteer hours at my local hospital (plenty of patient contact/interaction) (anticipated +150h before matriculation)
-150h shadowing 5 different physicians (all MD 'unfortunately') (anticipated +100h before matriculation)
-100h volunteer research assistant (anticipated +400h before matriculation)
-several scholarships, numerous awards for academics, and have been involved in honor's program and other academic programs
-interesting projects: rebuilt sound system in my vehicle, designed a self-heating pouch for MREs as part of chemical engineering senior design, and built an EEG for a master's class (I started the master's in my senior year in college)
If you're curious, my 17 MD schools are: Albany, Creighton, MCW, NYMC, Oakland, Quinnipiac, Rosalind Franklin, Univ. Oklahoma (I grew up here - 19 years), Virginia Commonwealth, WVUSOM, all FL schools (FIU, FAU, UF, FSU, USF, UCF, UM)
Does my URM actually help all that much? My largest concern is the MCAT score
(128/124/127/126)
