Hello all, this is my second time posting. Got some great advice the first time around but have made some updates over the past 10 months and was hoping to get some more advice and help narrowing down my list. I plan to apply this cycle.
About me:
Undergrad: Bioengineering, large state school, well known for engineering, sGPA 3.62, cGPA 3.70
I did waitress 40 hours/week during undergrad to help family out (not sure if this matters)
Master's (thesis based): Mechanical Engineering, same school GPA 3.88
MCAT: 509 (128/127/127/127)
Maryland resident
Research:
About 6000 hours -overall 2 first author pubs and 1 coauthor with more coming. A few conference posters (3) and presentations (1)
My master's was funded by a prestigious graduate research fellowship
Spending my gap year in a surgical robotics research lab at top 10 medical school (2000+ hours planned)
Clinical:
80 hours shadowing oncologist
45 hours shadowing cardiology/interventional cardiology
75 current hours volunteering at a cancer center, over 200 hours planned (continuing through gap year)
350 current hours Chief scribe through scribeamerica, over 1000 hours planned (continuing through gap year)
Other Work:
700 hours- TA: 2 study abroad programs, one to New Zealand/Australia, one to Antarctica
2200 hours- waitressed 2 years during my undergrad (30-40 hours/week) to contribute to my family
Other volunteer:
800 hours on trip to bring clean water to village in rural Ghana
Special olympics swim coach volunteer (15 hours over 10 weeks)
Leadership:
Mentored 17 undergraduate students on a year long research project
Service chair in my major's club, officer position with sorority during undergrad
TA and chief scribe as listed above
So for my schools I've narrowed them into reach, target, and target low yield. I'd really like to attend a school with excellent research however I know my MCAT and GPA are a bit low for a lot of top tier schools. I also recognize that every school will have some great research so not trying to be snarky here.
Reach:
Albert Einstein
Case Western
Hofstra
Mayo Clinic
Michigan (I realize my MCAT is just below 10th percentile)
Pitt
Target:
Eastern Virginia
Quinnipiac
Medical College of Wisconsin
Penn State
Saint Louis University
Uniformed Services
Maryland
Miami
U of Wisconsin
VCU
VT Carilion
Wake Forest
Low Yield:
Rosalind Franklin
Drexel
Georgetown
Temple
Loyola
New York Medical College
Rush
Sidney Kimmel
New York Downstate
Tufts
Tulane
U of Illinois
I've saved up enough to apply to ~20 schools. Which are a waste of time or money? Any I missed?
I appreciate any comments or help!
