Hi! Long time lurker seeking advice on my school list for the upcoming cycle.
STATS:
Alumni (graduated 2018, now working in clinical research)
Major: BS in Biology (focus in Ecology and Evolutionary biology) at a non-HYP Ivy.
GPA
-cGPA 4.0
-sGPA 3.97
MCAT: 519 (129/129/131/130)
Research: 1500+ hours
-Basic science research through HHMI Phage Hunters
-Basic science research on carbon storage in trees through Harvard Herbarium (summer internship)
-Basic Science research on energetics of walking in domestic and wild turkeys and in quantifying muscle shape change during motion (Sigma Xi Honorary Research Society)
-Honor thesis in biology department
-Clinical research in endocrinology through MassGen (one abstract at Endocrine 2019, one paper in JCEM, another in Clinical Psychiatry, one upcoming abstract in RSNA)
-2 or 3 publications more hopefully by interview season (fingers crossed for a first author!!)
Extracurricular:
-D1 Equestrian (also team social chair)
-Organic Chemistry Tutor
-Part-time job at a furniture company as admin. assistant/social media guru
-prospective student day STEM programming organizer
-Women in Science Mentor
-Foster home for dog rescue group
(extra stuff now that I've graduated: working on riding instructor license, starting a baking blog)
Hospital volunteer: 0 hours-- I work at a hospital, with direct patient contact including phlebotomy, scheduling, recruitment for our studies
Non-clinical volunteer: 1500 hours (been volunteering with hippotherapy programs for the little kids since I was 13)--PT/OT assistant, basically
Shadowing: 100+ hours
Residence: MA
My focus is either on pediatrics because I love working with kids, global health research (I would be interested in researching the effects of microplastics on health or on conservation on disease emergence), or dermatology because I like the way my derm made my life sooo much better. I did decide later on in college (mid-junior year) that I wanted medicine (previously vet-med), so most of my shadowing experience is pretty recent.
These are the schools I have so far:
Yale
NYU
UPenn
Johns Hopkins
UChicago
Columbia
Harvard
Stanford
Northwestern
Cornell
Mount Sinai
BU
Duke
UCLA
Case Western
UCSF
Brown
Dartmouth
UMass
Emory
Tufts
Georgetown
I would love some advice on how to create a more balanced list and which schools to consider removing. I think it's pretty top heavy right now and would love some suggestions on which schools to consider removing or adding!
Thank you so so much!
