Hello everyone. I am a Finance major that I applied 2020 cycle with 521/3.70c/3.85s and I was rejected by all of the schools on my list. I applied basically to every school in FL (IS) and then 3 OOS schools. What advice do you have to increase my chances next cycle??

521/3.70c/3.85s - ORM - Finance Major

-100hrs clinical hospital (onco unit)
-150hrs internship with environmental org.(received class credits)
-100hrs salvation army
-60hrs shadowing single doc (ortho surgeon)
-100hrs nonclinical hospital (surg waiting room)

-NO meaningful leadership exp (I instructed BJJ/MMA classes at my Universities MMA club)
-NO research exp
-Both Science LORs are 1 liners and completely impersonal

Thinking my major problems are ABYSMAL LORs, lack of research, unexceptional community service and no leadership experience that applies. Any advice on how to boost my application would be very much appreciated. Also any ideas on how to obtain better science LORs (ie taking higher level science classes as non-degree seeking at a CC to obtain letters) would be very much appreciated.

1) rewrite all essays, and have multiple eyeballs vet them
2) Get new LORs. I am guessing that you showed some bad judgement in picking Faculty to write LORs who could not, in fact, write you good LORs.
What you need to ask is this: "Professor Jone, do you know me well enough to write me a good LOR for my app to med school?"
3) Get in 100+ more hours of service to others less fortunate than yourself.
4) Research is not required, but it is useful.
5) Take a gap year to fill these holes in your app
6) Get in another 50-100 hours of clinical exposure.
7) While the bias against reapplicant sis mostly SDN hype, as this will be your 2nd try at med school. You need DO schools on your list as insurance. Any DO program. I can't recommend Touro-NY, Nova, Wm Carey, LUCOM, for different reasons. MSUCOM? Read up on Larry Nasser and you decide. LMU has an accreditation warning, which concerns me. CalHS is too new and appears to be too limited in rotations sites.
8) Not directed at you, but all SDNers must remember that a high MCAT score doesn't not automatically make up for deficits in one's app, even at the MCAT ******.

Suggest, if possible, contacting faculty from your UG school. Otherwise, see what you can get at your closest universities.

Goro is an advising SAVAGE and his advice is gold. OP, follow his advice and shoot your shot. Your stats are strong so you might even throw a few top schools in there.

Is there a reason why you didn't apply to more schools?
Didn't have enough money at the time because of school, bills and the MCAT. Also considering I live in FL and we have like 8 MD schools, many of which are mid-tier to lower-tier, I figured that if I couldn't get into one of my IS schools then the chances were not great of getting in anywhere else OOS. The next cycle I will have quite a bit more money to apply and a much better app. I plan on trying to hit around 25-30 schools including 5-6 DO schools. Since I don't have any research I'm not going to waste my time and money with top schools next time around. Getting in next year to any medschool is all that matters to me.

Remember that it's about fit. If you don't fit with lower tier schools, they might not take you since your stats are much higher than theirs.
