Hi, I will be living in a very tight budget. I am wondering if $600 would be enough for living in Pittsburgh. As I was told that Pittsburgh is one of the lowest cost cities that still maintain and "city life", I am thinking if it's possible to find a shared apartment at $300/mo., cost of food: $200 ( I cook alot), taking buses everywhere ( free for Pittsburgh student): $0 , miscell: $100. Does it sound realistic????

I talked to my friend who went to Pitt undergrad and she said that yes it is possible. She said that when she had a "really nice" studio with all of the utilities included it cost her $420 per month. Granted, this was in 2000, but hey, it's Pittsburg, they can't have changed much. She also said that if you had a roommate, it would definitely be possible.

It's definately possible but you might need to either find a roommate or live a little further away. Although the Oakland area might have some apartments in your price range. I live in Shadyside and pay 1000$ in rent but I also have a roommate, so it ends up being 500$ each. My friend rents in Highland Park and she pays about 300$ per month for a studio apartment. You have to estimate about 60 bucks a month for utilities..if not more. Also, cable plus internet costs about 60 bucks a month. Unless you want to get a phone line then you can get free internet through the university. You can definately take the bus everywhere for free. 200$ for food sounds reasonable, especially with the weekly specials at the local grocery stores, and the cheap fruits and veggies you can buy in the strip district. Hope this helps

OH this is wonderful! Beezies and Kathy, thanks for your great information!
I haven't thought about cable TV...man I love the food channel, HGTV, Bravo...that $60 is a must!
🙂

Have you ever thought about cooking for your classmates? I'm sure many single guys/gals would love to pay you to cook for them. Good luck and I hope you won't have to move.

PS: I love your PAT : )

Totally doable, check this out, I live of a 360 dlls/month budget here in Cali. So if I can do it here in cali, it is totally doable in Pittsburgh

I must admit after living near Pitt's campus for 7 years now, it is relatively cheap for a city. I have friends that live in other large cities around here (Philly, Cleveland, etc) and they all pay more. Of the apartments I have had in the past I payed $325 for one (2 people 2 bedrooms $650 total) and $400 for a another one that was nicer. This was one of the major reasons for me to attend Pitt is because the living expenses that you get from loans can go a lot farther here than it can in Philly
