Yeah, it's for real. I interviewed back there in October, and that's the number they gave us. I've heard conflicting numbers though from different students: one of the student reps told me that she was paying about $54K/year, which seems pretty low. The FAaid office said that the actual total cost of WVSOM was comparable to NYCOM and NSUCOM, if COL expenses are considered. Hope that helps.

72,000 is the maximum amount that the school says you can borrow. I doubt many people actually take that much out every year. If they do then they most likely had some left over.

That is crazy and would definitely would stop me from attending WVSOM. Are they kidding? What do they offer that exceeds that of anyother school?!

Tuition is ~44K/yr. Living expenses in Lewisburg are relatively cheap. You can get a decent apartment for less than $400 a month, close to the school. I would imagine you would not need to borrow the entire 72K. If I go there I'm sure I would need 60K a year max. It's still expensive but not jaw-dropping 😱 expensive.

obviously the amount of debt..

Thank you....I did not realize that. 😉

From what I've heard, most students borrow less than the budget. If you look at the breakdown for the budget, you'll probably see that some things are unreasonably high. For example, I think they give you $3k for a new computer -- well, no one needs to pay that much to get a computer. Also, the rent you need to pay is probably less than what they're budgeting, and the same might be true for utilities, etc. It's actually a good thing for a school to give you a generously large budget because it makes it easy for you to borrow more if you have some exceptional circumstance that makes you need more money.

thanks guys...this info helps out a great deal!!!

WVSOM is a good school and the budget they set to get loans is more than you will need. At least you have the option to get the loan if you need, unlike other schools where the budjet set is soooooo limited that you wonder how you can survive.

Just so no impressionable pre-meds are misled into
believing that it is okay to take on this amount of
debt, I feel compelled to post here. Unless you have
an opportunity to go to one of the ivy league schools,
under no circumstance should you seriously consider
going to a school that costs ~44k for tuition alone.
That is a rediculous amount of debt to take on over 4
years...and you still haven't even taken loans to live
on for that time yet. Your first choice for med
school should always be the cheapest, which is usually
your in-state university. If you don't get in at your
in-state school and it comes down to going to an
expensive school like that or waiting a year and
retaking the mcat, wait a year and retake the mcat.
There isn't that much difference between schools so
there's no point in paying more for the same, even if
they gave you the best parking spot on your interview
day. Paying back >250k+ with interest rates going up
will take the rest of your natural lives...
Choose wisely, b/c by the end of the 4 yrs you'll be
wishing you hadn't taken on so much debt.
