Hey all, I have a couple of questions regarding the dental application process. Any help would be appreciated:

1) When, precisely, is the DAT offered? I assume it's the same date nationwide? If there's more than one test date, please list all of them.

2) When are applications generally submitted? For instance, if I want to begin dental school in the fall of '07, when does the first round of applications start? May/June '06? Also, if I want to participate in that first round of applications, I assume it's better to take the DAT prior to application, correct?

Thanks in advance. 🙂

1. the DAT is administered any day of the year. if you need to cancel they have a 48 hour policy.

2. for the entering class of 2007, the applications will be avail on the web in mid-May 2006. you can submit it the day it comes out (if all your stuff is ready to go of course) or whenever you're ready to submit. earlier the better, though!

you can submit your app before you take your dat's. the testing center will be mailing out your dat scores to the schools you designated so even if you haven't taken the dat's, if your app is complete, pay and submit!

good luck!

Start early....best advice.

Thanks for the prompt responses, guys. 🙂

FRIENDS: Any day of the year? Is it an online exam or are there testing sites? How can they do that-- do they have an endless variety of exams so that they're not worried about one student taking it and passing along the questions to his friends the following day? Odd...

So basically the hold-up is the application, and the DAT can be taken whenever, either before or after the applications are submitted, correct? If I take the DAT prior to submitting my app, do I personally include my scores on the app, or is it simply forwarded to the schools I apply to in the same manner you state above?

the DAT is online but you have to take it at a designated testing site. The hand you your score when you walk out the door. They have a big question bank to pull from, you will not get the same test as your friend that takes it the day before, but you will likely get a few of the same questions.

there is a spot on the aadsas application to enter your DAT scores but it is not mandatory if you haven't taken the DAT. If you have taken it you fill this part out. You will also need to have your scores sent to your designated schools when you sing up for the DAT.

Thanks for the info, TimR (and everyone else). Much obliged. 👍 🙂

One more thing: if you take the DAT multiple times, I assume the schools you apply to are forwarded all of your scores, correct? How do they view, say, an 80th percentile score followed by a 92nd percentile score, for instance?

Only the standard scores are reported to the dental schools. They won't see the percentile.

Yeah, I know that. I just didn't feel like writing 21/22/20 etc. 😛
