So... I thought I was all set to be a part of the University of Illinois at Chicago Class of 2010. All of a sudden, the MSTP MD/PHD program at Medical University of South Carolina calls me up and accepts me! I got no love from any of the MD/PHD programs and was fairly content that the MD route is for me. Now this... What do you all think? MD @ UIC vs. MD/PHD @ MUSC. I'm an OOS for both schools and I hear it's balls-expensive to go to UIC as an OOS. It doesn't matter for MUSC because they'll give me a stipend of $22k a year. Money aside, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each program? Any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Do you know what you want to be when you finish, and does it require a PhD? That will give you an easy answer. If you are undecided, do you have any preference of where you will be living for the next 4 years? These locales could hardly be more different. And if all else fails, there's always the coin flip option.

I definately want to be in academic medicine, no doubt; although I hear that research does not require a PHD degree... the PHD just makes it easier. But doing the MD/PHD also means delaying residency, fellowships, etc. for another 2 to 3 years. Charleston, SC vs. Chicago, IL is a big decision. I am a city person but I love both places when I went. Warm and sunny vs. cold and windy. Resort city vs. big city. I love them both. I'm at a loss.... but I do hear that MD/PHD students have an easier time getting into the top residencies. Is this true?
