Hi everyone, I've been a lurker for a while (but registered!).

I've searched the threads, search engines, blogs, and everywhere else you can think of up and down for information about what life is like both as a graduate student in pharmacology (PhD) or a pharmacy student (PharmD), and the two as careers....especially what someone does/did as a pharmacologist and how much do you start off making and can make. I've stumbled across a few good blogs (raindrop, CALRULZ8) but I need more..MORE...MORE!!!

I'd especially like to know what day to day life would be like at UOP, UCSD,UCSF, and USC. I appreciate any feedback y'all could give me.

P.S.-I'm currently a Chem w/ Biochem emphasis Major at the University of San Diego (USD).

Welcome fellow San Diegan! I know that you wanted your questions answered, but I have a question for you.

How do you like USD? I am considering transfering there (if I don't go to UCSD) majoring in Biochemistry. I heard the class sizes are small at USD and the teachers are great (it is the opposite of UCSD where classes are HUGE and TAs do a lot of the teaching). Just curious.. Thanks🙂

what the heck? JDPharmD and JDPharmdD? where does this coming from? too weird to be true.. pm lord999(???) he is in graduate program.

I love it hear! USD is awesome. I didn't like the big class sizes and the fact that teachers straight up copy (or more often-miscopy) their notes on the board at Berkeley. At USD classes are nice and small and the teachers do know their stuff! And you can ask as many questions as you like. The campus is beautiful and the foods great 😀

No TA's except in lab--but they're only there to assist the professor who is actually doing the teaching!

Any more questions about USD, feel free to ask. I saw that you're from Carlsbad, right on! I graduated from Eastlake High School (Chula Vista) but now live on campus at USD (family housing which our (my fiance and I) scholarships cover!)

Yeah, we're two different people though. I post the explanation here:

But in short~ I didn't realize someone had JDPharmD? the day I first visited and registered. You figure someone might have JDPharmD but the JDPharmD? version caught me off guard! Sorry again about any confusion but hey...if it helps, I'm the guy in the picture! 🙂

Welcome JD. Feel free to help yourself to anything in the fridge. 🙂

Do you like the screen name "JD USD"?

Alright everyone, so i've PM'ed Lee and hopefully the new name will be accepted. Thanks for the idea bananaface. 👍

But nobody confuse USD w/ the U.S. Dollar ok?!? USD=University of San Diego. Go Terreros!!

Aside from the renaming myself, does anyone have any feedback as to the original topic?? 🙂

No problem 🙂

As for the original question....
Pay can vary quite a bit in different geographical areas and by pockets of differing demand.

In WA a retail pharmacist generally starts in the 75K/yr ballpark. I have worked with people who were approached and asked to move to CA and practive for 100K/year. I will let other people tell you what the rates are in their areas of practice/geography.

Wow! :wow: I live in CA so that's amazing to know that the shortage is so much so that pharmacists are being recruited from even up north. Do you think the 100K offer would be made to fresh graduates from pharm school or to those who already have some experience/already established?

Thanks for all the input so far! BTW, if you didn't notice, I'm officially not JDPharmD anymore! Let the good times roll!
