Recently, I finished the 5 years ENT residency training and will became Atteding in next summer in Taiwan. I am wondering if I can apply a fellowship program in U.S. Is there any hospital will have this chance? or more exactly, do you admit the Taiwan`s residency training?

Now I had pass the USMLE step 1 and step 2 CK with the step 2 CS is going on. I am preparing the TOFEL test on the same time, too.

Dose anything required for me(an international resident) to apply a ENT fellowship in U.S.

Beside, I`d like to apply a PhD Program in US. I specially intrest in the otology. Is there any useful information for me about this Programs.

Thanks a lot

Actually, you are wrong. It completely depends on the fellowship. Lesser-known fellowships for some H&N, rhinology, otology, and peds oto do not get filled by US grads and are open to well-qualified international grads. At Iowa, our rhinology fellowship isn't as prestigious as Kennedy's, Kuhn's, or the Cleveland fellowship, so sometimes we have an international fellow for a year.

For example, an international grad looking to go into otology may have little chance to get a House, Michigan, or Iowa fellowship, but there are a number of others out there that they might be able to get into, especially if they were looking to return to their home country to be the "specialist." I don't have much info on PhD side of things.

Posting incorrect and callous messages like the one above makes international grads feel that US docs are arrogant and pretentious. I guess some of them are correct.

You may be able to work out a deal with a program where you would visit and do research. House Ear Clinic in LA has a visiting researcher program where you can visit and do research with the attendings there on various projects. You will not operate during this fellowship.

For awhile Miami (Balkany's) fellowship was advertising itself as a fellowship designed to train international grads, but I think they have since stopped doing that, at least in the last several years.

The problem is that in order to operate you have to have a US license, and in most cases be board eligible for otolaryngology in the US (meaning have done residency in OTO in the US). This is especially the case for ACGME-accredited 2 year neurotology programs.

Best bet is to contact programs directly, see if they'd be willing to host you for a research block or for PhD.

Hi
I am an ENT surgeon based in India , and have recently finished my residency program . I just read your reply and wanted to know how to find out which are the less sought after fellowships in Otolaryngology

I have been applying to a few places in Canada and Australia , but not in USA , as I was under the impression that it is impossible to get into a program there

could you please tell me if I should keep my hopes up

You can always apply and see what happens. The Academy website has a list of fellowships but not all of them may be listed. My advice is also to scour the back of the major journals and see who is looking for fellows.

Do not let anyone tell you that you can't do it or you have no chance. Especially from an unregistered person.
You more then highly qualified to come and do a Fellowship in the US however they will lay a lot of stones in your path.
My husband went to St. Johns Medical School in Bangalore did his Residency in Chandrigah and then went to Oxford University in the UK (where we meet) England does not recognize the Residency training from India and he did an entire Residency then in Oxford again. From there we applied to 10 Fellowships in Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery with intention to specialize in Microvascular Reconstruction.
We took the first one who called us because we as well got discouraged by some unregistered person BUT after we accepted the first one all other applications came in and we were accepted by all 10 programs!!!
Good Luck and feel free to contact me should you need any help.

\ tshantanu, if you are a foreign Physician and come on an H1 B visa to do your fellow ship you are not Board eligible.
You only become Board eligible if you have been in a University Hospital set up for 10 years then you are eligible to sit for the American Boards. OR if you repeat your Residency in the US then you would be eligible as well.
We've been there and done it.

difference between Board eligible and Board certified is simple if you have done the American Boards and passed you are Board Certified and you are Board elegibile after having done your Residency here or been in the University Hospital set up for 10 years.
You can get all this info of the American Board website, but the detail with the University set up for 10 years they have taken down but if you call them and ask them it is still in effect and the Board will give it to you in writing.
Also having the Boards only rely makes a difference when you go into private practice as your Malpractice Insurance would be lower then. And of course there is some facilities or Institutions who would want you to have the American Boards.

Hey
I agree with a previous message, DONT LET ANYBODY TO DISCOURAGE YOU. I know it is very difficult to get any ENT position in the US, but it is possible. If you are really committed to it, you may spend some time, even may be years, but if you really thing that what it is for you then do not give up. Write, call program directors (not secretaries), attand conferences to "shake hands"........create connection and let people know you. I am not sure about otology (I am a surgeon interested in HEad and neck, which is also not easy to get position in), but I have seen 3-4 FMG with foreign residency training in ENT doing Head and Neack surgery Fellowship in the US.

VENT and CSKYCHEN like I said my husband came to the US with his foreign residency training and did a Head & Neck Microvascular Reconstruction Fellowship and we are still here because they asked him to join as Faculty then.
It can all be done, do your USMLE 1, 2 and 3 you got your ECFMG and your TOEFL then you are set.
You know you should get in touch with Institutions who offer those kinda Fellowships at least a year prior, because all the Fellows are usualy already selected for July 2007 so you apply now for 2008 and maybe come over and try to get a year as an Observer.
Also make sure you come on an H1 not on a J1.
Good Luck!
As for you VENT see if you can get in touch with Professor Richard Hayden he is at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and if you can get a Fellowship with him for 2008 you be set he is as far as I know the best you can get a Fellowship with. http://www.mayoclinic.org/ent-sct/13996088.html

BEN MD FRCS

Thank you very much for your valuable information. I really appreciate your help.

In fact, that is funny, but I wrote to Dr.Richard Hayden at Mayo a couple of weeks ago (before you suggested me:) :). He looks like out of office until December something. But the Secretary wrote me that all spots until 2008 are filled. Anyway I will try contact him later too.

Dear BEN MD FRCS, as your husband went through that difficult way, I would really appreciate to ask him some (2-3) very important questions. FOr confidentiality reasons I would prefer to use E-mail.

Please if it is possible can you guys drop me a message at [email protected]. So I can write my questions. I would really appreciate.

Hey Let me know about fellowship status in australia.

Bumping this thread...just in case anyone has any additional info if foreign doctors (practicing ENT physicians in their home country) can do a one/two year advanced fellowship/training (accreditation not mandatory - may want to go back to their home country after that).
