A med school I'm applying to recommend I take span. Do I still have to take a semester of Spanish even though I tested out of it?

I really don't want to take Spanish, due to the fact that college-level Spanish would definitely lower my gpa. I did well enough in high school to compete all four years. However, If it's a pre-req, I suppose I have no choice. Any thoughts?

A recommendation is not the same as a prerequisite. For school-specific questions, the most accurate information will be from the school itself. So if it is truly unclear after reading their instructions, contact the school for clarifications.

When I was applying, I remember only schools in PR require Spanish as a prereq... If you are applying to these schools, I think Ponce School of Medicine requires you to take the class(es) to fulfill their Spanish requirement. Universidad Central Del Caribe and San Juan Bautista requires the 12 or 8 credit hour (class or CLEP). Don't waste your money applying to University of PR because they take ZERO out of state applicant.

Just to piggyback off of this. I personally took CLEP on Sept 10 and had the 10 credits in my transcript by Sept 25 so it does not take very long if you're still interested in applying to the other two schools.

When it comes to filling out the section of the AMCAS about your fluency, what category would you place yourself in? If you aren't comfortable marking yourself as fluent, then you should take a class. If the worst grade on your transcript is in Spanish, no one will think poorly of you. When you take 120+ credits, a 3 credit course contributes not more than 12 quality points out of a potential of 480 so it has a very, very small impact on overall GPA.

If you really want to learn a language and become fluent the. taking a college course won’t be the best option. There are groups and outside classes that you can join. There are also apps that you can get.
