I've read about how hard it is to get residency as an IMG, not even mentioning the more competitive ones like categorical surgeries. But I recently came across this post saying that he's a UK med school graduate and did PHD in the US and matched in to Plastic in California. I was wondering how the others think about this

I have no idea why I would want to do that. Not even mentioning it was a five years old post.
I just hope to know whether he is just an outstanding lucky individual, or it could also be done by many others.

He is an outstanding and lucky individual.

That said, a handful of IMGs (US or otherwise) always match into the ultracompetitive specialties every year. This is due to them being both exceptional applicants and quite lucky. You should not apply to these specialties as an IMG and assume that you have a realistic shot.
