a projectile has no velocity in the y-direction but has velocity in the x-direction?

I was wondering if someone could explain why.

That would occur at the peak height in the infinitely small period of time where the constant downwards acceleration switches the direction of travel, assuming it was launched with a positive initial y velocity.

The x velocity is constant assuming drag is negligible.
