I was discussing the definiton of "General Biology" with a friend. Most every school requires "General Biology I & II" or "Two semesters of Biology or/and Zoology"

I only took Bio 151, our semester-long cell biology course, then Bio 300 Human anatomy, then Bio 3-something mamillian phys, then bio 600, biochemesty (anatomy and bio 151 had labs, I also TA'ed bio 300's dissection lab for a semester)

The question(s): Do I not meet the requirements? Did I need to take the other bio 152 course and lab? Anyone have experience with schools being flexible about this?

What a whack situation to be in. Tell me something encouraging please. :scared:

You need basic Genetics, Evolution, Physiology, Cellular biology and ecology for the MCAT and I assume for medical school. If you can prove to them that your classes did this then I think you could convince them to let it slide. However they want a full year of lab, so if none of your courses had this you definatly have to take the 152 course.

Why didn't you take the intro bio classes? If you did not need to take them because of APs, then you should be fine for med school requirements, but there may be some gaps for the MCAT.

Edit: I did not see that you are currently studying in China. I am not sure how foreign pre-med courses will "convert" for medical school admissions. I would probably call a U.S. med school and ask. Good luck.

I stated that I had labs... I got a 13 on the BS. Bump.

I already graduated a year ago (China is just for research and learning to speak Chinese). I didn't take the second bio class because I was a mechanical engineering major- I think I had the idea the all my other bio credits counted as general biology credits.

OwnageMobile, when it comes down to it, you have to ask the schools it will be different for every one.

The requirement is usually 2 semesters of Biology with Labs. You can take any biology classes you want, but they generally want you to have labs included.

First requirement....learn how to spell ("reqiurment"). Not that spelling has anything to do with med school, but it'll sure help you on your PS and secondaries. 😉

And for you, a sense of tact. Thanks for the sic man, but did you have to be such a dick about it? Grow up.

I obviously didn't check that after writting it- furthermore your rendition of my word is a misspelling of my original word, "requirment." (You also made a grammatical error, but let us not be hypocritical ...) I am a dyslexic, and a terrible speller, but that's a typo; and hey, I check all my "big words" with an on-line dictionary. 😉

Ok, while I'm on top here- wtf do you mean by "learn to spell"? I knew I never should have skipped spelling class...

I had this problem. I took a Botany course but no general biology course due to switching majors from Nursing to Biology and since one of my majors included a few more difficult courses similar to Biology (classses were Nutrition, Microbiology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology) My professors thought the General Bio would be redundant and told me I didn't have to take it. I was afraid of having to take the class when filling out secondaries, called the school and they said just to use a Biology course that wasn't used for my upper division requirements on the application. I applied to three schools and haven't had anyone tell me that my Microbiology course couldn't be used as a general biology credit.

Thanks for the help guys- noelle, you get any interviews/acceptances? 😉

Yep - I had interviews at Mizzou, KCUMB, and KU (wanted to stay in midwest, crazy, but true). I got accepted at KCUMB and should hear back from KU this week.

Heh, I'm from Lawrence, KS, and love the midwest. Good for you- "Fu*k the nay-sayers 'cause they don't mean a thing."

If you can "weather the weather" there is no place better to live then the midwest, cheapest cost of living, friendly people, fantastic sports scene and when you want to go somewhere else you are allready half way to everywhere. Oh and lets not forget central time, which rocks living on the east coast this year has really made me miss it its really suprising how I end up staying up an hour later just because TV shows start an hour later.

"asking strangers on the internet" = "concrete evidence" ? haha!

Anyway, I bet you're fine. At my school the intro bio sequence was actually three courses ("genes and evolution," something I can't remember about cell bio, and "organisms and ecosystems [mostly physio]"). Since I didn't decide to be premed until halfway through senior year, I could only take the two that were offered in the spring, so I never took the middle one. I met the "two semesters of bio with labs" requirement, and I learned all the cell bio stuff on my own for the MCAT. Not a problem.

You'll be fine - you do not need to have a year of introductory biology, just a year of bio with lab (anatomy is fine, physiology is fine, mircobio is fine, etc.) With a 13 on the BS section, there will be no doubt in their mind that you can handle the bio.

Concrete evidence? I'm on the quarter system and one of our quarters of intro bio does not include a lab. Thus, I took human anatomy and the lab. More concrete evidence? If you're not a bio major at our school, you don't have to take one whole quarter of intro bio (because it's plant bio), and instead you can substitute any upper div bio course w/ a lab.

being named "chuck norris" is a "general requirement" to world domination.

Chuck Norris doesn't walk on water, he makes water stand under him.
