Besides creating a large tuition hike, does anyone have any thoughts on how the latest budget crisis might affect the quality and reputation of the school.

I'm not a student, but the following is an e-mail communication from my premed adv., hope it helps:

Today President Robertson announced the response of OHSU to deal with
the impact of the recent loss of the tort cap for OHSU and all public
entities. There are a number of aspects to the response by OHSU to this
circumstance that have been outlined on the OHSU website but there are
some that impact medical students more directly and I wanted to add some
information in this regard. The decision making in this circumstance
was governed by identifying what was core and distinctive regarding the
OHSU mission and if a program were considered otherwise it had to be a
self-sustaining program. Outlined below is some additional information
of interest to you.

1. Tuition Increase: the increase in tuition for the currently
matriculated students will be held per our SOM policy to a cost of
living increase. For the last 5 years this increase has been held to 4%
annually. The increase for next year will probably be 5% for
matriculated students although the exact percentage has not yet been
finalized it should be close to this percentage.

The tuition increase for entering medical students will be 17%.

2. Regional Clinical Curriculum: The clinical clerkship/elective
experiences in Eugene and Bend will be discontinued in the 08-09
academic year. As you are probably aware the 07 Oregon Legislature did
not fund the regionalization of medical education initiative to provide
funding for this program over the next 2 years. The private foundation
funding we garnered to fund this program at the beginning comes to an
end this academic year. Without supplemental funding the regional
medical curriculum can not be supported.

3. Reduction in Class Size: The entering class size will be reduced
from 120 to 115. This is the number of clinical clerkship students that
can be supported at OHSU and the Portland area in the absence of the
regional clinical venues. We will embark on identifying additional
clinical sites at OHSU and in Portland.

4. Integration of School of Dentistry Basic Sciences into the SOM:
this reorganization involves the basic science faculty. This does not
involve including the dental students in the MD curriculum.

5. March Wellness Center: It has been determined that OHSU can not
operate the March Wellness Center. OHSU is currently looking to
outsource the operation of March Wellness and wants it to be available
to students and employees. If this facility is closed in the absence of
another vendor, it is anticipated that student fees for March Wellness
will be adjusted accordingly.
