I just wanted to respond to all this AA talk. As an African American Male.....ONE OF THE truest minority in medical school... it makes me afraid for the people you guys will be treating. Reading this board just affirms the fact that when you see someone like me...you automatically assume that you are superior. This fact just continues to make me strive further for excellence....Not to prove you wrong, but to let other see that it is possible to achieve excellence irrespectful to the opinions of others. NONE of you have any idea what it is like to be a BLACK MAN...When I go into the convenience store to buy a soda....most people think I am there to rob the place......TOO MANY PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS STILL EXIST....I am not saying this to garner any sympathy....only to let you know you should think before posting opinions with racist undertones. HOW MANY AFFLUENT URM FAMILIES DO YOU THINK EXISTS IN RELATION TO THE NUMBER NON-URM FAMILIES?...it's just truly upsetting to see people on this board try to make up instances to support the abolision of AA when the fact is that medical school is only 10% URM and about 1% African American Male.....NO I AM NOT SAYING THAT RACE IS EVERYTHING....BUT NO ONE CAN BASE THE TRUE NATURE OF ONE'S ABILITY TO BECOME A PHYSICIAN ON THE MCAT......THIS HAS BEEN BACKED BY 100% OF THE PHYSICIANS I KNOW...In closing, I ask that you think about what you write on this board before writing it....because if this board is a representation of the future physicians of America.....then AMERICA BETTER START PRAYING NOW CAUSE IT DON'T LOOK PRETTY!!!! If anyone has anything positive to add please do so....HATERS....PLEASE STAY AWAY!

Wow. What a post. I hope none of that was directed at me, but I fear that it might have been. If you are referring to mine and other's immaturity in the name-calling in one of the other threads, please don't bring race into that. That was simply a childish argument and nothing more. If you are referring to the thread that I started entitled "Affirmative action and the mcat" - I will be happy to respond to that:

Nobody is saying that the mcat predicts how good a doctor you're going to be. The same can be said of grades. But you do need something to measure kids by, and I don't see how we can just throw away grades and mcat scores like they dont mean ANYTHING. I think AA had its place, and maybe even still does have a place in certain areas of society, but when it comes to something as serious as medicine, I think it should be based completely on merit. I'll admit that I think there is something wrong with adding 9 points to the mcat score of blacks and adding almost a full point to their GPA, simply b/c they are black.

Does that mean that we shouldnt have black doctors? Of course not. What it means is that if you're black and you want to be a doctor, I think you should have to be just as qualified as any other race. Is that such a radical statement? And there are certainly plently of blacks out there that are smarter than plenty of whites.

And your numbers are simply wrong. med school is not 10% URM. The top med schools are more like 50%. Check out US news and world report's book on med schools.
