Getting back to the original question...
Unlike undergrad admissions, I think the waiting lists for medical school are less "you're good, but not quite good enough" and more "these people are our reserves to pull from when people we accepted decline our offers."
So maybe your goal should be less "please accept me" and more "if a space becomes available, i'm your man (woman)." I would guess that if you're waitlisted and don't do anything at all, you have little to no chance of getting in, right?
As for stories, I know someone who got into Hopkins but really wanted UCLA (although she was waitlisted there), so she wrote a letter to UCLA basically saying that even though she had an acceptance from Hopkins, she would definitely go to UCLA if accepted. It worked--she got in during the last week of May.
