I thought I'd share my experience with my fellow SDN'rs. I am fairly early in the process, still completing my pre-reqs. So I hope this isn't boring. After several weeks trying to locate a dentist that would allow me to shadow him/her I found one. My sister called her dentist and the rest is history. Anyway, I had my first shadow experience today, and boy was it great! The dentist had me work on some molds (not sure what the technical name is) and work thru the process of making a crown. I worked on the process about five hours---I filed several teeth and made some temporaries. Without asking him, he asked me if I would like to come back next week and the following week: Of course, I jumped at the opportunity! He said next week he will show me how to make a bridge and them some restorative work. The staff personnel were extremely helpful, and were more than willing to help show me how the billing process works. I also got to observe him work on several patients, and I must say, the whole experience was far more exhilarating than my hospital or emergency clinic experience was. Overall, I'm more excited about dentistry, now. Sorry for rambling on, but I wanted to share my experience.

Consider this hitting the jackpot re: shadowing! That Dr. sounds great and you should take full advantage! Good luck in the applications. :luck:

Wow, you definitely scored big by getting that dentist. Your experience there will be invaluable to you. Have fun with it.

I agree, you are getting some really great experience. All of my shadowing consisted of me showing up with a tie and trying to blend into the wallpaper. Good job - and don't forget to thank your sister for helping you find this opportunity. One last thing: when you become a dentist don't forget to return the favor in kind to someone else.

I will definitely return the favor when I'm a dentist. It was very difficult to find a dentist who would allow me to shadow, and now that I have I definitely feel priveledged.

hey thats great! I also found a dentist who I have just started shadowing and he also let me do some dental work on some model teeth that had black die for cavities. I was soo impressed by my experience and I have seen a lot of different procedures already after three visits. Its also great cause hes got two different types of lasers, one for tissues and the other for teeth. It's cool when we step to an area in his office and discuss a patients diagnoses and prescribing meds cause I actually know some things about drugs since I work as a pharm tech who USE to want to become a pharmacist.Good luck and have fun with your experience.
