Well I got one and I have a 3.75 overall and a 3.81 science.

i got one with a 3.2 so i dont know about there being an automatic cut off

Same here. I have a 3.25 and I got an interview as well. Im out-of-state.

There's an automatic cutoff decided by computer. It's certainly possible to get an interview with stats below the cutoff, but if your stats are above the cutoff, you can get an interview even before you turn in the secondary.

Anyways, for the OP, the 3.8 is overall GPA. Incidentally, the cutoff is kinda flexible...I'm OOS, with a 38/3.7, and I got the auto-invite.

You can also be above the cutoffs and still not get it either (I know couple who did not get automatic with the numbers above cut offs).

I visited UM and the medical school is first rate. The medical complex is incredible, among the best that I have seen. I don't quite understand why UM is not rated. Any feedback?

Its the University of Michigan everyone is talking about, not Miami.

I've never applied to or seen Michigan so I can't comment. I was asking why Miami seemingly doesn't get the respect it deserves. At least not from US News and World Report rating.

wow, that's an awesome policy... do you still need to fill out a secondary? do other med schools auto-invite?

i was 3.77 (3.8 sci) 37 at the time of applying and i got one, out of state. UM was a really nice school, they seem to have their act together. except for supreme court cases...which they did mention...with pride sigh

I hate to seem oblivious, but what Supreme Court case were you referring?

An automatic cutoff?! Where did you all get this info from?

In 2003, the supreme court struck down an affirmative action system used by the University of Michigan undergrad. Their system worked by assigning points to things like GPA, SAT, etc. Minority students got additional points. The Supreme Court decided that it was unconstitutional.

The system used by UMich Law School was, however, upheld. The court decided it was ok for race to be a factor, but could not be an "over-riding factor" or something along those lines.

The cut off is automatic in that everyone above it gets an interview, not that everyone below it doesn't...

I think that UMiami is ranked 54th as of now. The ranking system employed by U.S. News uses undergrad GPA, MCAT score, peer recommendations, student:teacher ratios, and NIH funding to determine the "best" medical schools in the country. What part of those categories do you see "great teaching" or "wide variety of cases?" The U.S. News system is pretty haphazard way of judging the quality of a university. I think that our match list speaks for itself.

Last year, the Miller family donated 100 million dollars to UM for research. Because that donation is from a source other than NIH, it will not count toward our rank. How screwed up is that?

Yeah, I saw a copy of their scoring system back in the day--it was really random, you could get at most 1 point for your essay but then you could get 20 points for being a minority or handicapped...so conceivably you could write a coupla lines of crap and still come out ahead. I don't know how they came up with the 20 points idea, especially since the most you could get overall was like, mid 100's.

The essay was out of 3 points according to the scale. GPA was the bulk of it--for something like 80 points. The 20 point adjustment was actually possible for a variety of things--racial diversity, socioeconomic barriers, scholarship athlete, etc.

People like to focus on race when they talk about Michigan's scoring scale, but ignore other categories that applicants can receive points for that aren't based on "merit."

6 points--Underrepresented Michigan county
2 points--Underrepresented state
4 points--Alumni affiliation
5 points--Men in Nursing

Michigan's aim for diversity wasn't just a racial one (even though that receives the most attention). Its goal was diversity in race, socioeconomics, geography, and other factors.

So? UCLA got a billion dollar donation. How screwed up is that?

Should we then include the size of a schools endowment when calculating the ranking of a school?

I could not find a record of a one-time billion dollar donation to UCLA. I think that you are referring to a campaign to raise $1 billion for the entire university, not just the medical school. When I said that UMiami received $100 million, I meant to say that all of it went to the medical school. At that time (late 2004), that amount was the largest donation ever given to a medical school. And yes, the endowment of the medical school is a very important consideration.

Hey, i was just wondering...i know that the auto interview cutoff for out of state people is 3.8 and 36, but do you know if the 3.8 gpa is for overall or science gpa?

funny, i met all of those criteria and didn't get an auto-interview

wow yeah, i mean like what school would want to train physicians who are most likely to help the underinsured/uninsured in this country that are disproportionately Hispanic and African-American!

Is the auto invite GPA and MCAT above the cutoff, or will you get an invite if either of them is above the cutoff?

They still do look glance at your file real quick. There may have been something that they saw that made them not give you an automatic interview. Like I said earlier (not that you do) but if all you have is grades and high mcat they won't give you the interview even with a 4.0 and 45.

you are also applying MD/PhD, so i'm sure the standards are different.

that could be it also (i didn't look at mdapps profile to see that)
