Who's goin!?

School schedule permitting, I'm considering a road trip - S.A. is a reasonable drive. I'm only a first year, but I was an ED tech before med school and, therefore, have a strong interest in EM.

Did anyone go as a 1st year?

I have gone to the AAEM SA since 1996. I'll be there.

Paul

I'm going.

Hyperbaric. I was a tech premed school and I went as a brand new 3rd year. Definatly worth it. I wrote a little article in the last common sense about what a positive experience it was and they didn't have anything at all specicifically for students back then. Now they have a student track planned. If you can you should definately go.

I'll be there. Should be a great conference...

I'll be there as well.

It is SO reasonable for all students and residents. If you live in TX, you really have no excuse not to go! You can join AAEM/RSA, and get to go to the conference FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Quinn

Jeopardy is gonna be fun. I am not sure who all got the invites and who all accepted but some HUGE names in EM were thrown around. Textbook names, etc. It will be fun to watch a resident team compete with them. I haven't seen this at SAEM or ACEP so I think it's pretty new for EM but I saw it at an ACP conference (IM) and it was alot of fun.

If TC will allow me.............. jk what is TC?
(Tasty coma wife?)

I believe the poster meant Taco Cabana, a Mexican fast food chain that is more ubiquitous than McD's here in SA. I don't even know if I can make the conference in my hometown, as I will be on the CCU that month! Hopefully can hook up with some of you all for a beer at some point! Steve

Thanks for pointing that out. I promise - I can read. And, sometimes, I do.

TC is definately something everyone who goes to SA should enjoy. At a bare minimum, breakfast taco's.

And then margherita's and tex mex on the patio of cha cho's. *sob*

My research group is presenting (not me presenting though this year or last). This year will be a bit different for me than the past 2 - different goals and expectations. I went as a 2nd & 3rd year student for the research competition and really enjoyed meeting people. Same this year, I plan on meeting some great people, but I'm going to go to the what to expect in the inservice exam b/c next year's conference is in March. In addition, I expect next year to be hectic as all get out, so I probably won't go to the conference anyway. Also, I'm in neuro right now so I plan on being spoon fed just a little bit for the shelf exam. I learn a lot better when things are in an EM context. So, in a nutshell, my expectations are for my research partner to give a great presentation, learn a lot, meet some great people and have fun 😀

'definitely' is not that hard of a word to spell. i only point this out because i once saw an application get tossed out of a program for it. i laughed, quite honestly.

p

Beers in San Antonio anyone?
goin' once

goin twice

????????

We're flying home tomorrow & had a really good time - my partner's presentation was great, we had some good food (LOTS of good food!) and now must go back to neurology on Monday 🙁

Please tell me someone ate some TC for me. 🙁(

just got in from the conf

which presentation was your partner's?

i found it ironic that the 'inspriational speaker' was the least inspirational of em all. He was too busy falling in love with himself and all his profits from his books...what a tool.

but AAEM did a great job overall...the surgeon general was an awesome way to set the tone for the weekend.

i didnt get too party and/or enjoy the food and all that texas has too offer unfortunately cuz my classmate and i were studyin each night for our 2 finals comin up this week
that sucked

but good times over all

People who police grammer and spelling "definitely" suck.

Yeah, he was a bit into himself. But I think he really did offer some great pearls about making a better CV/PS and interviewing...

mind sharing some of those pearls for those of us that were chained to our clinical rotations and could not go?

I doubt we're talking bout the same 'inspirational speaker'.

I'm referring to the author of 'chicken soup for the soul'...that guy was dreadful...I was so distracted by his constant spurts mentioning his books and profits that I didn't have a chance to be inspired.

Does a room full of physicians really care about how one man met so many celebrities???

I couldn't care any less than the next guy

In the student resident research thing, it was the STEMI alert pilot study. I was quite happy with his performance (and glad I decided to skip the chicken soup guy!).

Ooooh. Ithought you were talking about the other multi-book author. ;-) I'm on my IM rotation right now so I was only able to attend Saturday. Sounds like I was lucky that I missed the chicken soup guy...

mental note => rubbing your profits in the faces of others does not make for a good way to set the tone for an inspirational speech.

ok i beat that guy down enough

over it.

there were plenty of other great speakers.

the jeopardy session with attendings vs. residents was a cool concept but the way it was set up was disasterous. it was the first time they had done it so thats why but lookin forward to see that again next year.

We've been doing it for years at TCEP. Beer and popcorn all around and it can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately sometimes a little beer and a lot of EP competitiveness goes the other way.

As far as the jeopardy, a buzzer and one person answering at a time would have helped I think. I hope to be there to see it next year!

For the record the buzzer that was lined up fell through last minute.

Sorry I was being brief not defensive though looking back it came off that way. I wasn't even at the SA cause I am too broke but I was in on alot of the Education track planning. I'm glad the jeopardy was at least a step in the right direction. I won't take full credit for it cause I stole the idea from ACP (IM's specialty org.) but I came up with trying it in San Antonio.
The way ACP does it is cool cause they have state chapters in every state so MOST of those have regional competitions then at the national meeting each year they have a final tournament for all the state teams that show up. AAEM doesn't have that diversity in local chapters but ACEP could probably do it if they were interested.
