AAMC 4, VR passage IX

If you guys still have the old version of the aamc tests.... How would you guys read this passage? I dont understand this passage at all on the first read. THese are the times I get severely screwed on verbal reasoning ! Ahh, just when I had started thinking that I m getting a hang of it
