A virus replicates with host dNTPs. So host nucleic acid is being transcribed and then translated. Is my definition of nucleic acid too literal?

Perhaps the answer would look better if it said "translation of viral nucleic acids using host machinery".

Viral RNA is translated regardless of what part of the host cell is being used.

The passage shows a virus with reverse transcriptase. I assumed that this was a retro virus, or (-) virus. I guess this question is asking about viruses in general.

That's irrelevant. The point is the virus goes all Muslim and stuff and hijacks the cell's reproductive machinery, then blows up the cell. Then Bush is reelected.
