I am in the process of finalize and negotiate the contract with my employer. the contract stated that dentist need to give a written notice to employer 90 days before termination of contract, but the employer only give a written notice to dentist 14 days before termination of contract.

do you think this is reasonable? if it is not, what is reasonable or common time period for termination (2 months)?

thanks

Not reasonable. Should be equal on both ends.

Have you signed the contract? I have been in a few situations over the years where I had to give 90 days notice to terminate a contract. I, now, know why the time is so long. I have received a lot of information and advice regarding contracts over the years and it should be equal on both ends. I also found out that the very fact that you have to give a 90 day notice is because that particular company has a hard time recruiting providers. I've practiced for a good number of years, and I am certainly wiser regarding contracts than I ever was. I even had a company to end my contract without a reason, told me they didn't have to give me a reason and they continued to pay me for 90 days after I left. It was a learning experience and then I later found out that they did the same to providers years before me and those who followed me. I'm not saying this will happen to you, but if you can, have someone review your contract with you and offer you some advice and insight into your employment before you start. Ask as many questions as possible before you sign.

I've had 2 contracts in my career and both had a 90-day notice requirement for both me and the employer. This is fairly standard and is in place to protect both interests. As a doctor, it's not that easy to find a job within a few days, so 90 days gives you time to find something else and still be able to pay the bills (but make sure you have an emergency fund, of course). From the practice's side, they have a schedule and they want to be able to have some advance notice if a doctor is leaving. This will give time to maintain clinical flow and find a replacement if needed.
Both my contracts also had a 90 day grace period in which either party can terminate the agreement without notice or cause. In hind site, I should have used this in my first job out of dental school. I began working for a guy who was a Scientologist and he brought that stuff into his practice (i.e. weird meetings and consultants, etc.). I had no idea before, even after meeting with him and observing his practice. By the time I started, I had already moved there and had no other choice than to stick it out. Overall, it was a good learning experience and I now understand why they are considered crazy.
