So all of you post bacc'ers...now that you are accepted and will be started your programs this Aug/Sept (2002), will you be applying to med schools during this summer or wait until next June (what do you plan to do during the year b/t the post bacc and starting med school)? When do you plan to take the MCATs?

Also, I know that many of you in the program will probably be using loans, will your increased debt affect/reduce the amount you can qualify for med school?

Gosh...I know I'm asking lots of questions...but it seems like it's a neverending process :(

thanks....water

I'm confused. Why would you apply to med school this summer (2002) if you have not yet started your post bac? Would you be taking the August 2002 MCAT? I started my post bac in May of 2000, took the April 2001 MCAT and completed the post bac in May 2001. I then applied in the summer of 2001, which was the earliest that my application was complete. I am now at the end of my "interview" year and have spent it working. Good luck!

I'm assuming you've completed your pre-req's. If so, apply now and take the August MCAT. Most DO schools have a rolling admissions so the sooner your application is in and complete the better chance you have getting an interview. Are you going into PCOMs or LECOMs post-bac program?

There are several ways you can go about doing your post-bac, and it kind of depends on your situation. I am nearing the end of my post-bac program now. I took the MCAT last August and started the program last year too. I applied last summer, interviewed in the winter, all while in the program. This is kind of a stressful way to do it.
Most of the people in my class, started last fall, and took the MCAT in April and are now applying.
If you have a good MCAT already and just need to boost your GPA, you could probably apply now and they would be able to see your first semester grades, and the classes that you plan on taking in the spring.
If you need to do better on your MCAT though, it is probably best to wait on the application. Good luck.

I guess I'm mostly concerned with that year in b/t the program and med school. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I want to start post bacc this Aug and also complete med school apps at the same time to be accepted for the following year...that way I can go to med school right after completing post bacc. I feel I'm behind as it is (I'll be 25 this summer) and I don't want to wait another year (maybe I'm being foolish to think that way).

Barb- How many schools did you apply to while in post bacc? Do you think that if I apply to ~5 close to each other, that it will be less stressful and time consuming?

jean- I haven't decided yet...I'm not sure :(

Thanks for all the helpful responses

Hey Water,
don't be discouraged. I did the same thing that you are planning on doing, i.e., I started my post-bacc (special Master's, actually) last year and applied last summer for this year's entering class. I have been accepted to a school, and that was based in large part on my performance in the master's program. The school saw only one semester's worth of grades, and obviously it was enough for them! :)
Good Luck!

I applied to 5 schools, but only interviewed at 3. 2 of them were in January during winter break so it wasn't too stressful. I think that your plan of 5 is a good idea.

Hi guys...yeah, this sounds like a good plan. I've been thinking about going this route, and seeing that someone else has done it gives me hope. I'll submit my apps even with my low MCAT score  and hope that my post bacc GPA can show my dedication and ability to grasp hard core sciences. And if I don't get accepted, then a guess a year pf research won't hurt.

Barb- Thanks...Yeah, 5 seems to be a decent number to juggle. Hopefully, I can make into one school. Ah, the stress is killing me!

What special Masters programs did ya'll apply to? I'm thinking about appling for one. My gpa is a little low aroud 3.1, but MCAT's are decent 29.
I'm really nervous about appling for class of 2007.

Water,
Don't stress. You're plans are definitely accomplishable. Just get started on your applications and get everything done ahead so you don't get stressed by deadlines or anything. Pluse the earlier you get your app stuff in, the earlier you might get those interviews Have a great summer and good luck

Hi,

Can you guys post up what school did you go to for your post bac and your GPA during your first semester there.

I'm considering a post bac program too because I talked to my advisor who thinks my GPA 3.3 overall and 3.2 science is not high enough. Also because I don't have a lot of EC beside I shadow a DO once a week, research for 1 year, and is currently holding a position (treasure) in SOMA club at my school. I have not take the Mcat yet and planning to take it this August since I'm a 3rd year right now. so I'm sort of behind already.

Can you tell me more about the post bac program and how difficult it it because I plan to spend more time for EC like volunteering and stuff.

Please give me some advice because I'm very confused after my 2 meeting with 2 advisors.

Thank you so much.

Kate, you go to UCSD? Have you taken the MCAT? What are your plans for the summer? Classes? MCAT prep? You could do plenty of EC things over the summer if you apply to matriculate 2003.

Hi Jean,

Yes I'm a third year student at UCSD.
I will take the Mcat in August. I will have to take 1 class and shadow a DO in the summer also.

I thinking of volunteering at a VA hospital near my school starting next week.

Would you recommend the Post Bac program to me? Because I talked to 2 of my pre-med advisors and they think that with my grade and EC might not be enough to apply and suggest that I take a year off to work. HOwever, I prefer to continue with school like apply to a post-bac or master program.

Thank you for your help.
