I read the whole thing.

If the first few lines are too weird, then I look at the rest of the app for other weirdness, and make up interview questions accordingly. No, I'm not sharing.

Note that other schools may simply reject the candidate right then and there. With 1000s if not 10s of 1000s of apps to cull, any red flags make the process easier.
