I've been hearing mixed things on these forums:
  • Some say it is split up, someone reads the ps, someone reads the activities, etc.
  • Some say ps and MME are only read and the rest is skimmed
  • Some say 1 person reads your entire app and writes a summary
Every school does things their own way.

I review the whole app after the interview. I read the personal statement and specifically look for the words osteopathic medicine since we are a DO school. I am constantly amazed that students apply to our school and dont mention a word about being interested in osteopathic medicine. And yes... i would consider it a positive if someone mentions it.

Just curious, if it disjointed, then may be hard to have a theme that connects everything. Also, not sure how much overlap PS/activities should have.
To your point, while it's important to have a theme, given that there are a variety of ways an app can be reviewed, it is also important that each section stand on its own.
