I have a question to throw out to mostly the younger med students.

Does your entire circle of friends wherever you're studying medicine consist of just people in the medical school system? If so, is that a bother to you? Like, am I gonna go to lecture and say a line from Simpsons, and get a reply like, "Yeah, that lecture was a little slow. I think they should make this class more of a challenge..."

I've made a policy of not liking premeds at my undergrad b/c they were always so vapid and lifeless -- they didn't have lives outside of premed! Just so boring! Most of my friends at UCLA were athletes, so I didn't have to endure anyone with a really big ego or under boatloads of stress. +pissed+

I guess I'm kinda anxious about being transplanted so far from home in such a smaller class. Thanks for the responses, guys!

Sometimes I'm not so great at reading sarcasm, but... Which athletes did you hang out with, the softball players???

I'm not a young student, so I can't really answer your question...

Haha, seriously. Athletes often have big egos too! Just not about their brains. I'm a little worried about my future classmates too, but wait and see, you'll probably find people who you can relate to. Also, most med schools have an undergrad and other professional schools attached so if you can't make any buddies in your own classes, you'll meet people at the gym or the theater or whereever you go.

Funny I have this bad feeling that when I start in a few weeks that everyone will be either snobby, rich kids or just nerdy and study all the time. Maybe cuz a lot of med students I've met have been that way... any reassurances that there are some down-to-earth people in med school??

I'm a down-to-earth person who is also in med school. Do you believe me? 😀

Dude, EVERYONE thinks they're down to earth!

Med School classes are a lot like High School. You got the group that thinks they are too cool and party all the time, the group that is pretty cool and likes to hang out with the too cool group and the average group, the average group cares about their grades and studies a lot and will go out to the movies or to the bar occasionally to hang out, and then a few different groups of wierdos and/or nerds. Think of HS and where you fit in there - it is likely that you will fit in to a similar group of people in Med School.

Interestingly enough, many of the pre-meds we ALL hated will not get into medical school. *Sometimes* the interview process does work (and sometimes it doesn't. 😉 ).

I found most of my classmates very interesting people with a lot more going on for them than medicine. If you choose, its possible to socialize with people outside of medical school - just takes a little more effort to seek them out.

Wow! We've come all this way, just to end up back in HS

Will I end up in the bunheads group or the mods group??? Oh wait, I'm not a ballet dancer anymore, and there is no such thing as "mod" nowadays... 😀

Maybe it's a little different for the elderly 😉

ARGGGGH. I hated highschool. 😡
Maybe this is my second chance to do it right. Minus the uniforms, braces, acne, and 20 pounds of excess weight. 🙄 😉

I hope it's not like high school. :\

It is nothing like high school -- it is like revenge of the nerds! All of the kids who got beat up or ignored think they are so cool now.

I don't know why anyone thinks they are cool in med school -- we all got in (and are therefore smart), we all will end up in basically the same socioeconomic group, and no one is that great looking.

It's so like HS...

Class of 100 or so, everyone knows everyone, rumor-mill running amok especially who is dating who, who is going out with who and who broke up with who. Because of the fact that everyone is quite busy, one don't have time to hang out with people outside the medschool circle for the most part.

That's what I'm expecting too considering the class size and the school pride that most med students have. Being an undergrad pre-med was like junior high to me, except everyone was trying to one-up the next person with a grade or research instead of how low their pants can ride. Not to mention the insecurity and identity crises that being a pre-med can bring out. I loved high school though so if the analagy holds I'll be totally stoked man! Rock on!

I would only let a couple of people associate with me during the first two years of med school, and by the third year I only kept in touch with only 2 people from my class and basically ignored the rest. In the end it doesn't matter since during fourth year everyone is doing electives all over the country/world and after graduation everybody goes their own way for residency and you won't ever see them again. Don't worry too much about your classmates as you can ignore as many as you don't like during the first 2 years and after that you won't see much of them any way in years 3 and 4. Your best bet is to find a cool group of people outside of med school to socialize with, as most med school parties are just a bunch of nerds getting together to talk shop and drink themselves to death in order to cover up their rampant insecurities.

I guess we've proven that there are at least some people in med school who don't have a sense of humor. 😉

there are a few cool guys in medicine. and most of them are on the lower end of the class ranking hehe.

i hate to see that most of those are on the top 20 aren't really the smart ones, rather most of them are stupid geeks with photographic memories.

oh well... life

How paradoxical, that you were so unpopular in med school, yet you are so popular on SDN..?

It's even worse than HS, in my opinion. Not even HS was as clique-y as med school has turned out to be. Down with socializing. Draw into yourself. Introvert your mind. Join me.

definitely seems even more cliquey than hs to me...back to being a "floater" 😉
