which date is controlling, your active duty obligation or DEROS?

in other words, it looks like my separation date precedes my DEROS date by a significant amount

does that equate to an automatic extension of my active obligation, or does that just mean my DEROS is meaningless?

Your ADO is what you need to be concerned with. There is one caveat, when you execute orders, you incur an obligation which could change when you can get out.
