I have an ADT at BAMC next month, and just called that LSP # to make living arrangements. The person on the phone told me that the closest thing they have to fort sam is over 9 miles away! Since I'm not authorized for a rental car and there doesn't seem to be any subway, how am I supposed to get back and forth everyday? I searched the bus route, but I couldn't find any that went to BAMC. Does the army reimburse your for daily cab rides, or is there some bus route that I don't know about?

Take a car if you have one. Even if you are driving from 2000 miles away. If they have you downtown (at the st anthony?) that's cool. Make sure you take a car. If you don't drive you will have to share a car with 2 other ADTers which means you go in with the earliest and come home with the latest.

P.S. Did I mention bring a car.

I'd like to contribute to this discussion by suggesting that you bring a car :meanie: 😉

What? San Antonio, like all other cities in Texas has an excellent subway and public transportation system. Also, you can walk almost anywhere, and it is very convenient and timely. Also, taxis are FREE in the city and the outskirts.
This is provided the following apply:
1) By subway system, you mean 'invisible' train system
2) By walk anywhere, your legs are 100 long and you take one-miles strides
3) By timely, you mean you don't have to be anywhere for days at a time
4) By free, you make Oprah-type money and everything seems free to you.

I was always surprised during the many ADTs and TDYs I had back to that city that there were so many clueless med students and physicians who thought they could get around without a car. Even if you are driving from the NE or West coast, it is worth it.

So you guys really think it's worth it to drive the 26 hour 1600 mile trip there, and another 1600 miles back? If my car didn't already have 215,000 miles one it, I'd probably consider it. But the last thing I need to do is break down somewhere in the middle of bum-f*ck and miss the beginning of my audition rotation.

Have you done OBC? If so, it wasn't there? I mean, as you know my fiancee is down there doing it now and I went to visit. We agree: You need a car. It's not an option not to have one there. If you're over 25 you could eat the cost and rent one (how much would that be for over a month?) for awhile.

Just trying to be helpful...

just FYI (and to make you feel a *little* better about driving) even if you had been able to get housing "on base" it's still a good 3 or 4 (at least) miles to BAMC-- defintely not a quick walk to work by any means. I would recommend calling whatever department you are with and asking if they have any other ADT folks rotating through-- or even UTSA students (they rotate there as well). you may be able to get a car and split up the costs-- especially since if they are out of housing you may be in the same hotel anyway. or you can try calling the GME office that coordinates your rotation and ask her what students are rotating and contact them that way to work something out.

good luck
